Description: Harry Tapu details his whakapapa based on his tokotoko and the bird Kokako. Talks about Rereahu, how he got his name, his relationship with the Kokako, Rereahu and his child Maniapoto, the Rereahu iwi and the Kingitanga. Explains the tupuna on his tokotoko; Turongo, Raukawa and Rereahu. Talks about the houses in the Rereahu area. Talks about he was born in the house of King Koroki at Mangapehi, gives his full name Te Heuheu Taumoana te Rangituatea. Tells the story of the Waikato river, Taupiri and Tongariro mountains with reference to the whistling hills. Talks about the main source of eels, crayfish and fish. Details why Rereahu Marae does not have any carvings, why the tupuna didn't believe in headstones, the reason for the stone monument in memory of a Rereahu women and how they brought the wharekai from Benneydale in two pieces. Timber transportation, Pukemako bush, east of Mangapehi, Waikato

Description: Forestry workers with timber transportation equipment in the Pukemako bush, 13 miles east of Mangapehi, Waikato. Shows several men standing on a log on a railway system through the trees, and another man on a 1934 Caterpillar diesel 75 tractor with a winch on the back. Photograph taken in 1935 by an unidentified photographer. Publication note - Department of Internal Affairs. 1939. `Making New Zealand' 1(9): 28 For further information regarding the tractor in this photograph see Ken Anderson, Servicing Caterpillar : the story of the Taumarunui branch of Gough Gough & Hamer (Taumarunui [N.Z.] : C & S Publications, 2000). The tractor was on an eight month contract that started in January 1935. Caterpillar dealers Gough Gough and Hamer contracted to sawmillers Ellis and Burnand Ltd, to demonstrate the advantage of using tractors in the bush. Ellis and Burnand purchased the machine at the start of 1936 and used it at Ongarue until 1943 when it went back to Mangapehi. It was eventually scrapped in the early 1950s.
