Interview with Stan Wells

Description: Stan Wells recalls being sent by Ada Wells to a Salvation Army orphanage for boys in Temuka when he was six. Describes the few privilages, the starvation diet, no play and the work. Explains having his name changed. Recalls corporal punishments. Talks of his sister Alice known as Bim, sister Edna, also the few women who sheltered him. Talks of money provided by the Masons' Lodge for upkeep of this once grand home and its deterioration. Recalls having top marks in drawing and talks of his inability to play cricket or rugby at school later. Describes memorable days when the boys were allowed out of the orphanage. Explains about his holidays in Oamaru, meeting the Fergusons with whom he went to live, the servant - master relationship with Mr. Ferguson. Discusses similarities in the personalities of Harry Wells and Mr. Ferguson, an organist, and talks about their purchase of an organ. Discusses differenes in attitudes between Hazel Armstrong, who took an interest in him, and Mrs Ferguson. Talks about his work as a 15 year old on a farm at Wanganui, his work on a poultry farm with poor pay, and the cost of meals. Describes his jobs as a gardener. Explains that Bim's work was as a masseuse, also a compiler for Stone's Directory, and relates that she cycled to the West Coast during the Depression. Recalls his schooling, going to war in Egypt in artillery and infantry units, his treatment as a prisoner of war when he worked in coalmine and on a railway. Explains that he was sent to a nursery garden in Temuka on his return. Describes his psychiatric treatment after the war, spending time at Hanmer and names Dr. Bevan Brown, Frank Cook, Len Booth. Talks about religion. Describes visiting Ratana Pa, Wanganui and mentions successful health treatments there. Explains about his love of native bush. Recalls Frank Milner of Waitaki School. Talks of cycling, piano playing and his appreciation of music. Relates about girlfriends, his wife and children. Description: Album of photographs, probably taken by George William Barltrop, chiefly taken on a tour around the South Island. The first images relate to an area around Wellington, including Waiwhetu and Wainuiomata, including scenes of the Wainuiomata Reservoir. Two photographs taken in a park show three women wearing hats, full-length outfits, and carrying umbrellas, the "McNabs". One photograph shows a group of men and women, members of a camera club. The tour aound the South Island travels from Sheffield, down to the Otira Gorge, up to Lake Brunner and Inangahua, past Murchison, through Longford. In Wellington Harbour the steamship Ophir is sailing out, with people standing on the wharf in the foreground. Also in Wellington, is a large group portrait of men associated with the Missions to Seamen, gathered together on Labour Day 1901. Five photographs are taken around Otaki, one a pastoral scene, and two of three young Maori people (a young woman and a young girl in two scenes, with a second young girl in the third scene); a water mill; and a group of four people having a picnic in a field (two women (one obscured) and a young boy on the left, and a man with a bandaged hand on the right). The last few scenes are again of the South Island, at Temuka, Otago Harbour, Dunedin (including the Octagon), and a tram belonging to the Roslyn Tramway Company with a group of men on the front cab, and three standing in front. Description: Photographs taken during the royal tour of New Zealand made by the Prince of Wales in 1920. Many of the images are of military inspections and displays by school children. There are also displays of Maori dancing and singing, the sailors of the HMS Renown, on which the prince had travelled , prior to their soccer match in Dunedin, the prince addressing the crowds etc. A number of the images are in two-part panoramas. Also included are four scenic photographs by the New Zealand Tourist Department which may have been taken in 1903. The photographer for the tour photographs was Guy. Description: Album of photographs relating to members of the Student Christian Movement in New Zealand who attended conferences and camps between 1922 and 1935. The only person identified in captions was Dr John Raleigh Mott, an American who was closely involved with establishing the Student Christian Movement all around the world, and who attended the New Zealand leaders' conference at Waikanae in 1926. Two others have been identified by a family friend. They are the Rev. Herbert Newell, and Eaton Hurley. Conferences and camps were held all over New Zealand, including Ashburton (1922-23); Solway (1923-24, and 1926-27); Waimate (1924-25); Cambridge (1925-26); Dr. Mott's leaders' conference at Waikanae (1926); Brighton, Hutt Park and Campbell's Bay (all held in 1927); Campbell's Bay and Brighton (in 1928); Feilding (1930-31, and 1934-35); Bombay (1932-33); and Geraldine (1933-34). There are also photographs of the World Student Christian Federation Conference in Java in 1933.
