Description: Album of pressed ferns, most of which are used to frame images of New Zealand, but some pages consist solely of pressed ferns. The photographs show New Zealand scenes, and include two postcards of collages. One has the legend "Maoridom" and at the base "The old order changeth" with a photograph of Maori king Tawhiao, and various artifacts including taiaha, cloaks, and two preserved heads of Maori. The other shows portraits of a number of Maori men and women, and views of Parihaka and Ohinemutu. Among the views of new Zealand scenery are images of the White Terraces in eruption, the Pink Terraces, Manawatu Gorge, Dunedin, Queen Street (Auckland), Lake Ada, and Tois Tois [sic] Island on the Clinton River, Lake Te Anau. Description: Album of photographs of New Zealand (pages 1-10), Australia, Egypt, Europe and Canada taken by unidentified photographers circa 1880s. The New Zealand scenes are mostly in the South Island, including the Bealey, Cheviot Hills Station, the flying fox across the Teremakau [i.e. Taramakau] River, the Canterbury Plains, Governor's Bay and Timaru. One view shows two men in a logging camp; two views of the North Island show Muemutu [i.e. Ohinemutu], and Russell's Gold Battery at Taruru Creek. Australian scenes include a group of New Caledonian Kanaka with their "humpies" (thatched dwellings) at Bundaberg in Queensland; and one of the Wombat Ranges "the haunt of the Kelly gang". Several photographs of Egypt include views of Port Said, the Suez Canal, camels, Egyptians, and early ruins. Canadian images include Port Levis taken from across the St Lawrence River, and views of the Niagara and Montmorency Falls both in summer and in winter. Description: Photographs taken circa 1880s by James Ring, photographer based in Greymouth. Scenes in Greymouth and nearby include views of severe flooding (p 3-5, 7); loading ships at the wharf showing hydraulic cranes raising hoppers of coal, and rolling stock laden with coal for transportation. Three shipping photographs including the SS Gerda wrecked on the Greymouth Breakwater in June 1888; the SS Mawhera ashore on North Beach, Greymouth in 1886, and the SS Rosamond crossing the Greymouth Bar. Beyond Greymouth views include the Grey River, Rocky Island, Brunnerton and the Brunnerton Bridge, and the West Coast Road. Then views of Lake Brunner, Refuge Island and Mitchell Falls. The Teremakau [now Taramakau] River is next, one view showing the road bridge, and one showing the flying fox (wire bridge) leading over to the Teremakau Hotel. These are followed by scenes along the Otira Gorge, including Warnock's Nob, Westley's Creek (Wesley Creek), and Starvation Point, before reaching Porter's Pass, Broken River, Arthur's Pass and the Devil's Punch Bowl Falls.
