Description: Shows bird's-eye view of the area with roads, water-races, swamp, sandstone terraces, timber-covered hills, Lake Hochstetter, Nelson Creek, Gow's Creek, water race and pipe line. The shafts and hand workings are also shown, as are the Aldinga dredge workings. The other side of the pamphlet advises that there is a prospectus for the company, available on application. The values obtained from every shaft sunk, are described. There are recommendations from Mr J F McFadden, Director of the Westport School of Mines; Mr H Lowther, Manager of Lawson's Flat Gold Mining Co; and Mr Denis F Dennehy, Director of Golden Sands. The directors of the Greatr Western Company were to be: Mr Daniel Dennehy, Mr W S Richards, Mr R T Tosswill, Mr H L Bowker, Mr A McKellar, all of Christchurch. Description: Photographs of the South Island of New Zealand taken by Les Cleveland, 1956 to 1958. Information relating to the content as well as the date taken and the date printed, is on the rear of most prints. Most prints relate to the West Coast Region, but also some images of Nelson, Canterbury, and Otago regions. Identified people are: Kopara Sawmill workers Bill Brown, Owen Jacobs, Morry Pullman, Hans Van Ruyven, Jimmy Birchfield, Doug Macalister, Joe Kavanagh, Neil McLean, Archy Fluerty, saw doctor John Henry Ord, Ted McGhie; licensee of Nelson Creek Hotel D Graham; Dorothy Debenham; Mick Bowie, and chief guide at Mt Cook Hermitage. Unidentified people include a female French tourist and some children. Featured natural environments include Karamea beach scenes, mining and sawmilling sites, and Buller Gorge. Featured town sequences include Reefton and Nelson's Creek houses and businesses, many of which are derelict. Description: Photographic prints mainly taken by Les Cleveland of North Island buildings and Nelson buildings, people, and scenes. Taken circa 1880s, 1955-1963, and 2000s. Printed circa 1970s to 2000s. A few images are stamped "Les Cleveland Photograph" and some are also signed. Photographs of Wairarapa buildings include Whiteman Matthews & Solicitors (Featherston), Trotman Brothers Builders and Funeral Directors (Greytown), the Greytown Volunteer Fire Brigade, Mickey Phelps’s cottage (Carterton), and Bobby Ming’s market garden near the Waiohine River. Other North Island photographs show the Public Relations Office (Palmerston North), Savage Club Hall (Whanganui), Mission House (North Waimate), and Catholic Church (Tokaanu). Neslon images show Enterprise Printing and a number of prints of a corrugated iron building, one of which is titled "Judicial Outhouse, near Supreme Court, Nelson". Also contains a photograph of the protest by Sonja Davies, Ruth Page, and other women on the tracks at the railway station at Kiwi. A portrait of Nelson photographer Rosaline Margaret Frank as a young woman, circa 1880s, is taken by an unidentified photographer. Description: Gold dredges, gold sluicing, and machinery associated with gold mining in the South Island. Includes a few photographs taken in Australia, particularly the Pioneer Tin Mine in Tasmania. Inserted in a pocket in the front of the album are 19 loose prints, chiefly showing various claims in the North Island, some of which are taken by H J Locke. Also named in these images are the Saxon Mine and Ivanhoe Mine. Pinafore Claim was located at Waiotahi, Thames. Cambria Claim was a gold mine located in Thames. Gold King Dredge was on the Clutha River near Roxburgh circa 1899. Title supplied by Library. Date range estimated partly on dates that dredges were known to be operating.
