Description: Photograph album compiled by Robert Thomas Martin containing images of New Zealand, New Caledonia, and the Solomon Islands during military training and service in World War II. Some images likely taken by Martin. New Zealand images show training camps at Rotorua (1941), Papakura (1942), 1st Field Ambulance camp in Warkworth (Jun-Sep 1942), and Fencourt [Cambridge?] (1942). In addition to informal portraits featuring Martin, Colin Arroll, and other unidentified soldiers, there are images of tents, a route march, a hospital under construction and parked ambulances (at Warkworth), and a Bob Semple tank with soldiers and Martin and his sister Valerie posed in front (at Papakura). Identified groups include Warrant Officers and Sergeants in 1st Field Ambulance in Papakura, 7th Field Ambulance, and D Company. Also image of Martin walking down a street in uniform while on leave. Images from Rotorua also show Regent Theatre (exterior and courtyard), Post Office, Sanatorium building and grounds, St Faith’s Church (Ohinemutu), swimming scenes at the Blue Baths, and Maori children diving for pennies [at Whakarewarewa?]. Identified people in informal group and individual portraits at the Nemeara Camp are Doug Smith, Wally McKusker, Doug Smith, Stan Poomore, Shorty Luscombe, Jack Ireland, Allan Stewart, Bill Cullum, and Cliff Pinker. Nemeara Camp images also include a medical examination of an unidentified local man, local children and men, the cookhouse, tents, hospital “bure” [thatched hut], a combination water heater and incinerator, mess hut under construction, swimming area in river [including competition?], and Nemeara mission church (with Mt Boa in the background). Images from Bourail show the gendarmerie, Main Street, and a church. Description: The collection comprises four folders on Robert Martin's career as a post office employee and telegraphist, while the rest consists of papers, scrapbooks and newspaper cuttings relating to his military service during World War II in North Africa, Italy, and the Solomon Islands with the Field Ambulance service of the New Zealand Medical Corps. Correspondence with his brother, Martin, and his sister, Valerie, are included, as is correspondence with two of his comrades in the Field Ambulance. Also included is a typed translation of a Japanese diary which he acquired during the Solomon Islands campaign, probably on Mono in the Treasury Islands, and a typed copy of the diary and other papers of his friend, Colin John Arroll, who also served with the Field Ambulance. Some of the images show Reichel at Trentham Camp where he was an instructor, by himself and with others. He wears his army uniform in most prints. One image shows him relaxing with a friend, another strolling near shops smoking his pipe (this photograph is taken by Leicagraph Studio). Description: Interview with Clarence Brown, born in Auckland in 1924. Talks about being called up for the Air Force in 1942 when he was 18 and training at Levin and Wigram to be a wireless operator and traffic controller. Discusses going to Norfolk Island, New Caledonia and then to the New Hebrides where he was based at Henderson Base, Guadalcanal. Refers to New Zealand Hudsons flying day missions from the base. Discusses living conditions - mosquitoes, denge fever, bully beef, fermenting coconuts, lack of water, and boredom and their activities to relieve it. Comments on radar-controlled searchlights, and their gear rotting quickly in the conditions. Talks about the formation of a fighter wing of 36 aircraft, with 24 being kept serviceable. Refers to being a telephone operator. Talks about the base at Ondongo, and New Zealand planes escorting American planes in October 1943. Mentions the Catalina flying boats at Palagi that were used to pick up downed pilots. Discusses the period October 1943 to January 1944 when the Americans established a beachhead on Bouganville with three airstrips. Refers to going in by landing craft with their gear, the presence of Fijian troops, air raids, and American battleships shelling Japanese positions. Comments on support from P40 aircraft, the only Royal New Zealand Air Force aricraft engaging with the enemy in that area. Describes receiving a schrapnel wound in the eye, returning to Auckland for treatment, and eventually losing the eye. Thomas, a motor-trimmer from Christchurch, was called up for military service in Dec 1941 and saw action with C Company, 35 Battalion 2nd NZEF (IP) in the Pacific Campaign. The photographs are part of a larger collection which includes dairies and a pay book. The diaries cover the period 1 Jan- 9 July 1942 (vol 1), 22 Dec-31 Dec 1942 (vol 2), 1943 (vol 3) and 1 Jan-11 Jun 1944 (vol 4). During this time Thomas was stationed in Fiji and New Caladonia as well as fighting against the Japanese in the Solomon Islands.
