Nephew of Rosina Buckman. Educated at Hataitai School and Rongotai College. Employed by W. D. and H. O. Wills before joining the Armed Services, but was medically discharged two years later. Studied as a baritone at the Royal Academy of Music in London in 1940s. Returned to New Zealand in 1952 and became a radio (and later television) broadcaster.
