Description: Set of photographs of drainage operations on the Hauraki Plains. Spoil from the canal and ditch construction was used as foundation for roads so road construction is also shown. The photographs include two men hay harvesting in front of a small house, a man in a flax field, a dredge at work, the labourers' camp, boats moored at a jetty in Ngatea. Talks about the arrival of his father, a stonemason, in Auckland in 1909, work he did in the Auckland area and the advent of the firm. Describes joining the firm in 1931, going to Invercargill, returning to Auckland and shifting to Wellington in 1937. Discusses emoleum (emulsified bitumen), and its use on roads. Mentions the firm's work in Taranaki and the role of Russell Matthews, who built Tupare. Describes forming his own firm Bell-Wood (Bel-wood) Bitumen which operated in Wellington until the 1990s. Description: Ink and pencil annotations on partly hand coloured map (incomplete - only part blue colour and some red for proposed roads). The pencil annotations add crosses (population) and accidental orange brush stroke indicate draft copy. Map is hand coloured to a key that reads: 'Lines of road proposed to be made - red. Local position of Military settlements - red circles. Lines of road to be made at a future period - brown. The crosses (black) represent the distribution of the Native Population approximately each cross representing about 100 souls.' The military settlements are most dense in the Wanganui, South Taranaki, New Plymouth, Waipa, Waikato and South Waikato districts and north of the Manawatu River. Description: Mounted photographs by the Burton Brothers of the junction of Eden and Tees Streets, Oamaru showing St Luke's Church, shops, tram lines and part of the Council Chambers; looking down on the wharves of Port Chalmers with the Presbyterian Church in the right foreground; and the Kakahi Falls, near Tawhata on the Whanganui River. Two smaller mounted photographs of a river in the Catlins District. Three pages from a photograph album holding five photographs of the building of the Arapuni Dam on the Waikato River including the buried forest exposed by the Waikato River diversion. Three loose prints by J W France of an early settlers' cottage made of ponga with a turf roof and with the family outside; a group of six workmen standing on the road they were building with long handled shovels and a boy and a dog in front of them; and the funeral procession of Sir John MacKenzie in 1901 led by a pipe band up the main road in Oamaru working.
