By: Barltrop, George William, 1863-1946

Reference: PA1-o-296

Description: Photographs, probably taken by G W Barltrop. Scenes in the first part of the album are of the South Island, mostly around the Dunedin area, and further south, in Invercargill and Bluff. There are two panoramas, one of Port Chalmers and one of Lumsden. Most are landscapes, but a few show groups of people, including five young girls in the Dunedin Botanical Gardens, and a man driving a horse and buggy at Manuka Creek, with two young women sitting beside him, and a third woman standing by the horse's head. A graveyard scene is a close-up view of two headstones, one for Catherine Louisa Schaw (widow of John S Schaw), who died in 1874 aged 71. North Island scenes show a church at Levin; and views of the countryside, a bullock pulling a laden cart, and at the Rimutaka Summit all taken on a train journey. Group portraits include one of a large family group, with two young boys in the foreground with a cricket bat and cricket pads; and two large groups of men and women associated with the Missions to Seamen. One image show a plaque erected `In memory of twelve officers and seamen who were drowned or died from exposure, by the wreck of the Barque Lizzie Bell near the Oeo River, July 24 1901, erected by members and friends of the Missions to seamen, Wellington, New Zealand'.
