Description: Seaplane hoisted above the sea from the deck of HMS Ark Royal. Photographed by an unknown photographer in 1915. The aircraft is Wight A 1 Improved Navyplane, No 172. Wight seaplanes were designed by J S White & Co Ltd for the British Navy. They were used for reconnaissance and bombing during the First World War. No 172 was equiped with radio, a Lewis gun and could carry two 100-lb bombs and three 20-lb bombs. The wings could be folded back so that it could be stored on board warships.
