Jennings, Edward, 1854-1919

Born in Motueka in 1854. Was Master in charge of Waerenga-a-hika Native Boarding School. He was educated at Government schools (Nelson College, Bishopdale Theological College) and was ordained deacon in 1881, and priest in 1887. Was in charge of the Native Mission School in Otaki for five years, before he went to Gisborne, and became tutor at Te Rau Kahikatea Theological College, Gisborne. He was married in 1883 to a daughter of Mr B H Darnell, civil engineer.

Description: Comprises list of contents of three tapes transferred to the Oral History Centre and `fore-word' to the tapes. The reminiscences begin with Beatson's family settling in the Ngatimoti area and continue with descriptions of his family, the land they settled and farmed, events that occurred locally including shipwrecks, development of roads and bridges, schooling, church, fruit growing, house building, raspberry growing, tobacco growing and social life. Included are photographs and maps, an appendix of extracts from `An Expedition to the Tableland - Mount Arthur - 1880' by Edward Jennings and one on Woodstock, a rural subdivision. Description: Photograph album of images taken by William Fitzgerald Crawford illustrating a trip to Waikaremoana and Nuhaka, Hawkes Bay, and Gisborne District taken between December 27 1897 and 4 Jan 1898 by Crawford, Captain Thomas Crisp, E Crisp, the Rev Edward Jennings, and driver J R Redstone. The album is likely to have been compiled by Crawford as he has made similar, but the annotations were possibly written by one of the Chrisps. The images include many scenic images of rivers, mountain ranges, waterfalls as well as images of camps, huts, ferries,horses, waka, dinghies, carts, hotels, bridges and people, including Maori groups, the men on the trip, a Chief Surveyor's party and other people they met. Ngati Ruapani and Ngati Kahungunu are the two principle iwi associated with the places identified in the album. There may also be other relevant iwi and hapu.
