Description: Lantern slides of Africa, including identifiable places and scenes in Egypt, Sudan, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, and South Africa. The images were taken by unidentified photographers, probably in the 1930s. Some slides have captions written on paper affixed to the glass, that describe the location or subject. Seven of the copy images are from a larger numbered sequence of commercial slides. The images include: - Scenes in African villages and rural locations showing: herding of cattle, use of mortar and pestle, streets with dwellings, building of a hut, weaving, drying of crocodile skin, markets, man holding snakes, and people carrying bowls on their heads. - Members of various African tribes, including the Dinka people of Sudan and the Kikuyu people of Kenya (also known as Agikuyu). - Ruins of the ancient city of Great Zimbabwe. - Colonial buildings, including the Maputo Railway Station (Mozambique). - Coconut and other palms, banana, and baobab trees. - Camels being ridden, pulling wagons with barrels, or resting. - Sisal being produced, including stripping and drying of the fibre. - Scenes in Egypt, including the pyramids and the Great Sphinx of Giza, Aswan Dam, the Cairo Museum, streets and buildings of Cairo, and wharfs and boats along the Nile. - The Amphitheatre in the Drakensberg Range in South Africa. Description: Photographs relating to the life of Bryan Scoullar, taken ca 1917-2010, particularly his service in the army during World War II. Bryan Scoullar collected all the images and took some of them. Images are arranged in a loose chronological order, and contain: Family photographs, circa 1917-1941, showing his mother Genevieve (nee Pope), his father Arthur, and his brother Patrick. Snapshots of the family are taken at the family residence in Wellington and during outings and holidays in New Zealand. Includes images of Patrick during the war, at home on leave, and overseas. Two school photographs taken at Marist Brothers' School, Wellington, probably of Patrick or Bryan. Photographs related to Bryan Scoullar's military service in North Africa during World War II. These are taken and collected in Egypt, Syria, and the Western Desert, ca 1941-1942. There are also some images taken during his training at Trentham army camp ca 1940, and documenting journey on board ship 'Nieue Amsterdam'. Description: Mary MacGowan's journey out to new Zealand is represented by 8 photographs relating to Panama and the Panama Canal. There are some photographs collected during holidays in New Zealand which include views of Wairakei, Mount Ngauruhoe, Christchurch, Lake Kanieri, and Hongi's Track. Most of the photographs are associated with Mary's return trip to England. She left Wellington for Sydney on the "Awatea" visiting Hobart, Tasmania, and spending enough time in Australia to see Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide. From Sydney she sailed for home on the "Orontes" via the Suez Canal. Groups of photographs record deck life and other passengers, the warves, people and places visited while in Colombo, Sri lanka (Ceylon), the approaches to Suez and a visit to the pyramids sphinx and temples in Egypt, a stop at Naples and a lot of photographs and some postcards of Pompeii, and finally views of Gibraltar including one of a Spainish guard at the boarder post.
