Description: Photograph album created by Neville H Mosen of Raetithi. Contains views related to trips taken by the Tongariro Tramping Club and views related to the Mosen family and friends. Taken by Neville Mosen circa 1936 to 1937, and possibly some taken by other unidentified photographer(s). Contains scenic views and views of the Club members on bush walks and skiing in Tongariro National Park, featuring Ruapehu, Tongariro, Ngauruhoe and surrounding environs, the Pinnacles at Blue Bluffs, Ruapehu crater lake, Tama Lakes, The Chateau, Whakapapa glacier, Karioi Lakes, Mangawhero River and various tramping huts. Bruce Davis, an amateur photographer who lived in Raetihi is identified. Also includes views of Raetihi township and Horopito locality, Napier, Tauranga (rail bridge and The Strand), and Ngauruhoe erupting (possibly 1937 eruption). Also includes views of Tom Parker posing with the fountain he gifted to Napier in 1936 and scenes of a parade and bonfire in Raetihi to mark the coronation of King George VI in 1937. Description: Photograph album, mainly of holidays, compiled by Phyllis Long during her time in New Zealand, 1923 to 1926. Some photographs are likely taken by Long but other photographers are unidentified. Album features horse treks and horse riding. Two treks with Sylvia Lysaght are covered; one in Taranaki and Waikato Regions in January-February 1925, and the other from Wanganui to Lake Taupo, December 1925-January 1926. Includes images of Long and Lysaght on their horses Ngaio and Ladybird, places they stayed (camp sites, houses, huts), people they stayed with, and scenic images (bush, mountains, rivers, farmland, and coast). Images from the second trek feature the party of colleagues and friends Long and Lysaght joined (including Eric Tyndale-Biscoe and [Hugh Austin?]) and the Lake Taupo site at which they camped and as well as an unidentified Maori whanau with whom the duo stayed on their return journey. Tramping and mountaineering trips also feature in the album. One set shows a holiday to the Central Plateau, with the party staying in a hut at Whakapapa Village. Photographs include excursions to the summit of Mount Ruapehu, Tama Lakes, Whakapapa Falls, and Taranaki Falls as well as some skiing images. Another set of images is taken on a trip to the Taranaki Region. Mount Egmont (Mount Taranaki) features with Long and a female companion pictured on the summit. There are also a number of images of Dawson Falls, including some swimming and bush scenes, and scenic images of the mountain and surrounding area, with Doreen Ross pictured in one image. Other places visited by Long include Wanganui and at a farm with an unidentified family [Ross or Lysaght?]. Photographs from the farm show various people (including children), a chicken coop, lambs being fed, dogs, and horses. Another set of photographs show a motoring, camping, and picnicking excursions in a Model TT Ford covered truck. In addition to Tyndale-Biscoe, Frank and Elizabeth McGrath and their children Mary, Joan, [and Hugh?] appear in numerous photographs. McGrath family images include informal as well as a set of formal studio portraits of both groups and individual members. The family in captured motoring, in beach scenes [Kai Iwi camping trip?], on horseback, riding bikes, reading, and at a Mokoia farmhouse, with Long and Tyndale-Biscoe often appearing in photographs with them. Other people that feature include Long's teaching colleagues and friends from Nga Tawa and Wanganui Collegiate schools. Those identified in captions include Tyndale-Biscoe, "Shrimp", Else Rowe , Aubrey Fullerton-Smith, Conrad, Mr Latham, Mr [Cr]opper?, Mr [F.H.?] Latham, Mr Izard, Doreen Ross, and Roy Ross. Album also includes a studio portrait of Phyllis Tyndale-Biscoe in 1927. There are a number of images of Tyndale-Biscoe with his motorcycle. Commercial postcards feature photographs of Mount Ruapehu, Mount Ngauruhoe, and Mount Egmont (Mount Taranaki) as well as Waitomo Caves limestone formations, Wanganui River, and Wanganui Collegiate School. Three postcards are addressed to members of Long's family in England (and were sent). Another two postcards were sent to Long by Tyndale-Biscoe and "Himself" [Frank McGrath?]. Also a note from Hugh [McGrath?] to Long sent while she was travelling home to England. Larger mounted print of image of Long's horse Ngaio at PAColl-10463. Two treks and other excursions are described in depth in Long's diaries and letters to her parents. Description: Photographs of people, buildings, industry, and landscapes taken by Les Cleveland between 1951 and 1959. Largely printed between 1951 and 1960, with some prints made later, possibly in the 1970s. All prints have captions which include the title Cleveland gave the photograph (often including the location of the photograph) and the date it was taken and printed. Almost all images are stamped "Les Cleveland Photograph" and some are also stamped with Cleveland's home address. The majority are signed by Cleveland and all are stamped or identified by Cleveland as being a "Vintage Print". Some prints include reference numbers to Cleveland's index cards. Identified people are Jack Ritchie (former licensee of the Junction Hotel, Dillmanstown), Ron Biggs (boiling a billy), Dorothy Debenham at Greymouth, Mary and Heather Cornwell at Milford Sounds, June McMillan at Makara Beach, Senior Sargent George Christopher Donnelly (making a bet at the Kumara Races), and Mike Armstrong (washing dishes in a hut at Welcome Flat). Timber workers are photographed at work at the Kopara Sawmill including Ted McGhie, Ron "Tiki" Brimmicombe, Doug Macalister, and Neil McLean. Unidentified people include timber workers, the crew of the fishing boat Hauiti (photographed in Milford Sound), men in fancy dress participating in the Mayor of Thorndon campaign, children lining up to go to the pictures in Greymouth, children on a bulldozer in Karamea, a boy fishing at Reefton, a man smoking an crib logging at the Arawhata River, and a climber resting on a rock by the Cook River. A Taupo Ski Club group is photographed outside Blyth Hut at Ohakune Ski Field [Turoa] and includes Les Cleveland as well as a box of Lux soap. Buildings photographed include in Greymouth (band rotunda, police station), in Westport (Seatons Boarding House on Bright Street, Kawatiri boarding house (also known as Flemings Boarding House), and St Canice's Catholic Church), and in Nelson Creek (Saddlers Store, Jimmy Diamond's hut, township). Further prints of buildings show the Stafford Literary Institute, flooded bushmen's huts at Mussel Point, a cottage at Blackball, a derelict house at Bell Hill, ornamental faces on the Aubrey Gualter building (corner of Brandon and Featherston Streets, Wellington), the Four Square store at Crofton, Club Hotel in Palmerston North, a two-storied house with external staircase in Turakina, Enterprise Printing in Nelson, a cottage on the road to Goldsborough, J McFarlane's Hotel in Kumara, the Whanganui town clock, and the Weights and Measures Office in New Plymouth. Photographs of industry include a Pelton wheel at Dillmanstown; remains of a gold dredge at Callaghans near Kumara; Jack's Mill near Nelson Creek including a Type CBA No 119 A&G Price Ltd bush locomotive, derelict mill buildings, and a slab elevator; Kopara Sawmill buildings; an open cast coal mine at Charleston; and dredge buckets abandoned at the side of the Greenstone River. Scenic prints show the Tatere River and Tatere Gorge, Moeraki River, the sea at Punakaiki, surf at Hokitika Beach, a log jam and driftwood at Karamea Beach, Okarito River, bush scenes (including at Waterworks Reserve), the head of the Karangarua River looking towards Copeland Pass, the Karangarua Gorge, and Lake Haupiri. Other photographs include gravestones at the cemetery in Charleston, a hedge cutter mounted on a surplus World War Two Bren Gun Carrier, and vehicle scenes outside the George Hotel, Otira Gorge (a Hupmobile tourer and a front-end loader lowering a V8 engine into a truck), Title supplied by Library. Description: Photographs relating to mountaineering and skiing taken by Les Cleveland circa 1950s to circa 1970. A small number of prints include caption information on the rear of the print. One vintage print is stamped "Les Cleveland Photograph." Contains prints of scenic mountain landscapes which feature peaks, valleys, and glaciers in the Southern Alps (including Mount Cook). There are several aerial photographs. Unidentified mountaineers are photographed, including climbers roped together on a mountain face, building a snow cave, and at mountain huts. Also contains photographs of a group backcountry skiing, likely in the South Island. Downhill ski scenes are mainly taken at Whakapapa Ski Field. People, in skiing attire, are photographed but are unidentified with the exception of Austrian ski instructor Joe Maka[d?] (giving a lesson) and Judy Ryan of the Taupo Ski Club ( in a group photograph with staff from the National Downhill). People are photographed relaxing in ski huts and smoking, and one woman has her leg in a full cast. Cleveland's wife Mary Cleveland is photographed at an alpine geothermal area, likely Ketetahi Springs. Title transcribed from item. Description: Group of photographs showing the activities of a group of people based at the Whakapapa Hut, Mount Ruapehu, ca 1930. Many of these photographs were taken by Leo L White. The narritive accompanying the images suggest that they were intended for a publication like the Auckland Weekly News. They include - Men and women on the hut porch, the women mending trousers. Snowball fights. Watching other groups climbing Mount Ruapehu. Chopping firewood. Melting snow for drinking. The mail arriving. Taking photographs. Climbing to the ski fields. Skiing. Walking in the bush. Lunch breaks. Preparing food. These photographs are a fairly good record of what, for women, was smart winter wear in 1930. Re the group located at the Whakapapa Hut and the date of this. Firstly the women are wearing clothes and headgear that date from styles current in the late 1920s-early 1930s (ca 1926-1932). Secondly, a group of mainly women lined up with their cameras, are identified as ready to take photographs of Lady Fergusson departing [the Chateaux] for Taupo.
