Description: The journal contains an account of McNab's journey with observations on the places he visited. Includes mention of McNab completing the census aboard the SS `Taiaroa' on the night of 28 Mar 1886. Variations in title - Spine title `Travels in New Zealand' Relationship complexity - Also transcript styled as "Travels in New Zealand" (MS-Papers-6235-3) and microfilm (Micro-MS-0930) In Feb 1886 McNab left his home in Timaru for a tour of the North Island. He travelled by train to Christchurch, by steamer to Wellington and from there by another steamer to Napier. From here he travelled to Taupo via Tauranga by coach and toured the adjacent thermal areas and visited the Pink and White Terraces. Back in Tauranga McNab proceeded by steamer to Auckland from where he took another steamer to New Plymouth. From there he travelled by train to Wanganui and then on to Palmerston North from where he proceeded by coach to Masterton. Arriving in Wellington by train McNab sailed by steamer to Lyttelton and returned home to Timaru by train. Quantity: 1 folder(s). Description: Contains original of Henry Halse diary, April-May [either 1870, 1871 or 1874] describing Halse's journey from Ohinemutu, across Lake Tarawera and Lake Rotomahana to see the Pink and White Terraces and Lake Rotokanapa (?) and then back to Ohinemutu, Taupo, Napier and back to Wellington. Entries mainly note physical aspects of the scenery, comment on the places Halse stayed, baths taken and other such points but also notes meeting Sir James Ferguson and James Mackay Jr at Ohinemutu and attending a hui there on April 29 which discussed halting of land sales. He also mentions that the Bishiop of Waiapu and Ardeacon Williams were on the same boat on the voyage from Napier to Wellington. Description: Comprises typescript copy of original typescript of report by Baird on his visit to areas affected by the Hawke's Bay Earthquake. He gives the reasons for his visit, describes the people he met and the damage to each place he visited and includes observations on earthquakes in general and in particular. His travels (accompanied by Dr C E Adams, Dominion Astronomer and Seismologist) took him by car from Wellington, over the Rimutakas, through Waipukurau to Napier. From there he visited Hastings, flew over the land from Cape Kidnappers to Wairoa, and again travelled by car to places outside Napier and Hastings. Original carbon typescript was indistinct in places so there are omissions in this version. Description: Photograph album of images taken by William Fitzgerald Crawford illustrating a trip to Waikaremoana and Nuhaka, Hawkes Bay, and Gisborne District taken between December 27 1897 and 4 Jan 1898 by Crawford, Captain Thomas Crisp, E Crisp, the Rev Edward Jennings, and driver J R Redstone. The album is likely to have been compiled by Crawford as he has made similar, but the annotations were possibly written by one of the Chrisps. The images include many scenic images of rivers, mountain ranges, waterfalls as well as images of camps, huts, ferries,horses, waka, dinghies, carts, hotels, bridges and people, including Maori groups, the men on the trip, a Chief Surveyor's party and other people they met. Ngati Ruapani and Ngati Kahungunu are the two principle iwi associated with the places identified in the album. There may also be other relevant iwi and hapu.
