St. Paul's Church (Paihia, N.Z.)

Williams Memorial Church of St. Paul (Paihia, N.Z.)

Located on the site of the Paihia CMS Mission Station. First church was built in 1823 of raupo. In 1828 the raupo building was replaced with a lath and plaster structure until this was replaced in 1856 by a wooden church which was re-built again in 1874. The 1874 church was dismantled in sections and barged up the Kawakawa to Taumarere in 1925. The present and fifth church was built as a memorial to Henry and William Williams. Made of stone quarried from Pukaru, and timber from a forest near Waikare. The first organ to be brough to New Zealand was used in this church. It arrived 27 Aug 1830, while Henry and Marianne Williams were in residence. It was later moved to Pakaraka and is now in the Wanganui Museum.
