Description: Collection comprises diaries, letters, poems, written compositions, photographs and drawings by Rachel Bennett. This material depicts a young girl growing up in New Zealand in the 1970s and 1980s. Material covers family life, friendships, schooling, emotional relatonships and theatre activities. Also included with this original material are some of the litarary drafts used in the publication on her life. Bennett, 2001) Source of title - Supplied by Library Arrangement: The original order of this collection at deposit has been maintained within the arrangement and description of these papers. Series One comprises mixed folders with original material and draft typescripts. Series Two contains original material selected to be scanned for digital images for the publication. Series Three comprises miscellaneous material largely unused in the publication. Rachel Bennett emigrated to New Zealand with her parents in 1974 aged six. She attended Karori West Normal School, Samuel Marsden Collegiate, Victoria University of Wellington and Wellington Polytechnic (Nursing). In 1991 aged 23 she was murdered. The material within this collection comprises her own writings, photographs, letters, poems, paintings and drawings. Some of this material was compiled and edited by her parents for the publication `With love from Rachel'. Quantity: 29 folder(s). 0.75 Linear Metres. Description: Noel Virtue is interviewed by Bill Ralston on TV 3 about his autobiographical book "Once a Brethren boy", the story of his childhood, growing up in a strict Plymouth Brethren sect. Talks about his experiences as described in his autobiography: not being allowed to play with non-brethren children, becoming lonely, depressed and attempting suicide. Talks about being sent to Kingseat Hospital at age fifteen, after admitting he had homosexual feelings. Talks about the treatment for this and his depression involved electro-convulsive therapy (ECT) and how these experiences affected his life and work. Description: Harry Duynhoven was born in New Plymouth in 1955. Gives details about his father's birth in North Brabant (the Netherlands) in 1929 and his migration from Indonesia to New Plymouth as a farm labourer in 1950. Describes how his parents met and their marriage. Mentions their purchase of a house in Waitara, problems his father had with recognition of his Dutch qualifications, his parent's work on a small farm owned by nuns, their work ethic, work for the church and strong moral code. Comments on his father's changing his name and adjustment to New Zealand. Mentions his own pride in his foreign name. Comments on the absence of Dutch `knickknacks' in the house, Dutch rarely being spoken in the home and the invisibility of the Dutch migrant community. Mentions the Oranje Society.
