Description: Copy of an 1870 cadastral map of land blocks within the Manawatū-Wairarapa Block, from the Tararua Ranges eastwards to the Puketoi Range and Castle Point Block. Blocks indicate name, number and acreage, and include Kaihinu, Pahiatua, Te Pukahu, Mongorongo, Eketāhuna, Ngatapu, Ihuraua, Manawatū, Mangahauo, Puketoi, Tautane, Makure. Two blocks include note 'not passed the [Native Land] Court' (Kaihanga, Mangahao no. 3; 7,000 acres and Puketoi no. 6; 3,200 acres). Includes annotations such as the addition of Mangakao no. 2 block in 1881. Includes names of rivers, streams. Description: Survey map of Hakeri no. 6F (corrected in pencil to no. 4F), Waikawa showing the property claimed by James and Robert Ranfield as 361-2-0 acres (corrected in red ink to 363-2-0 acres). Distinguishable features of the property include the sea in the west, the Waikawa River, Hakeri, the Okaka swamp, Ngata Rata stream and Pukahu. Original title: 'Hakeri no. 6F ...' changed by pencil annotation. Several manuscript corrections to map, as per note on map 'NB: BF corrected in terms with Wairawa surveys - WIB'. Description: Tony Batley outlines his family history going back to 1863 when his grandfather joined the crew of the `Royal Bride` which sailed to New Zealand and anchored off the coast at Napier (Paytoney) where a local gale blew the vessel over. Local Maori formed a living chain and saved the crew - Grandfather was thirteen years old with no possessions. Was hired for a couple of years by Sir Donald McLean who had a sheep station at Marae Kakako. Evenually in 1882, after several jobs, grandfather returned to Moawhango and opened a store with his brother Thomas Snelling and in 1883 opened a post office. He acted as interpreter for the Maori Land Court held in Moawhango in 1894. Discusses his life in Taihape, apart from 4 years in the Airforce, which included a course in firearms in Levin and Ohakea camp before duty in the Solomon Islands, arriving in Guadacannal on his 21st birthday. Recalls the RNZ Airforce camp called `Bloody Knoll on Ridge' had been a scene of heavy fighting in 1942. Describes the tension. Refers to Ventura bombers, the S Brauning Machine guns and depth charges. Describes the impact of returning to Moawhango and the Taihape district and how it re-awakened his interest in the history of the area and in 1946 he began to abstract his grandfather's diaries and relates extracts from them. Describes many interests. He was on the Council of the Polynesian Society; was a Board Member of the New Zealand Historic Places Trust; Chairman of the Kaimanawa Kaueha Forest Park Advisory Committe; President of the New Zealand Archaeological Society and currently on the New Zealand Historic Places Trust Regional Committee, Wanganui. Discusses the peopling of inland Patea by Tamtea and his descendants. Notes that Ngati Hotu were the original iwi. Discusses Winiata marae and the Moawhango and Orua Matua carved houses. Tells the story of Ngatarua and land given to Ngati Hinemanu. Description: Sonny Te Ahuru was born in 1918 and has lived in Te Rena most of his life. Describes Te Rena during his childhood. Talks about the Te Rena School and punishment for speaking Maori. Notes his grandfather started their farm and his father worked at the mill, Weir and Kenny, measuring logs. Explains how to catch wild cattle, hunting meat for food or sale and hunting birds, including kereru, tui, kaka and kiwi, when they were plentiful. Mentions changes when loggers arrived and the shooting of cattle for sport. Describes going to work with his uncle Barney Pakau as a forest labourer. Describes returning to Te Rena, working at the mill at Putateraru and clearing land near Owhango for the Department of Maori Affairs. Kepa Patena was born at Pukati in 1938. Recalls Tokaanu Primary School, punishment for speaking Maori and his father's emphasis on tikanga Maori. Describes working in the butcher shop. Explains the formation of land trusts with Maori Affairs and the difficulty of a number of land owners and unwillingness to work on the land. Describes possum control in the area and difficulties with 1080 poison. Describes working on the Taurewa Block converting the southern parts of the Tongariro Forest to farmland. Corresponding negatives are at 35mm-98921-98926 and 99023-99046. Most images are of either: scenes at the Whanganui tribes' occupation of Pakaitore (also known as Moutoa Gardens) at Whanganui taken 18 and 25 March 1995, OR the site of Te Porere-a-Rereao, Te Kooti's redoubt near Papakai village, Taumarunui county, taken 19 March 1995. The Pakaitore images include a set of group portraits with Niko Tangaroa, Ken Mair, Tame Iti and others, who were photographed with the Tuhoe flag 'Te Mana Motuhaka o Tuhoe'.
