Description: Photographs of New Zealand military personnel serving in the Middle East and Italy during World War 2, 1943-1944, taken by various photographers and compiled for official purposes. Many individuals identified are listed above, but while many others are identified in group portraits they are not named above. This album changes between the Middle East and Italy, with the bulk of the Middle Eastern images between pages 1 and 71, and the Italian scenes on pages 49-52, and from 72 onwards, with a few Middle Eastern items interspersed. Recreation for soldiers with sporting activities including athletics, cricket, swimming, tennis and softball, some of which are in competition with personnel from other groups including South African Division Artillerymen. New Zealand engineers building a pontoon bridge across the Suez Canal with the help of Belgian Congo troops; NZ reinforcements arriving in the Middle East; troops voluntarily donating blood; parades and inspections by Freyberg and Inglis, and decorations presented by them (p 9-13, 23, 33, 36, 62). Hitchhiking from Maadi into Cairo; street tailors altering uniforms while the soldiers wait (p 15-16); camp cinema. Description: Paddison's memoir recounts his experiences of training to be a soldier in the New Zealand Army. The recollection includes a very detailed description of all facets of training to be a gunner in the New Zealand Artillery. He recounts his enlistment with the Territorals, military life in the training camps (Mount Cook Barracks, Linton Military Camp, Trentham Military Camp, Waiouru Military Camp), artillery practice sessions at various locations including Foxton and Ashurst and his increased responsibilties as an instructor of cadets. There are many digital photographs included in the typescript depicting soldiers (also group photograph of the 2nd Field Regiment NZA taken at the Winter Show Buildings, September 1940), weapons and vehicles like the Marmon. The account concludes as Paddison prepares for depature with the 2nd NZEF, 8th Reinforcement. Source of title - Title transcribed from item 2nd Lieutenant Paddison joined the New Zealand Artillery (Territorials) at 19 years of age in 1939. Description: Transparencies relating to the service of Kenneth (known as Ken) Edwards during the Vietnam war (1961-1975), taken between circa 1967 and circa 1970 by Edwards. Edwards served three tours with 161 Battery. Slides are not individually dated, except for one at 1968. Many have captions. Images document a large range of aspects of military life in Vietnam, particularly large guns and ammunition. Also includes pictures of helicopters, and soldiers in camp. A few show Edwards. Some photographs are identified as being taken at Nui Dat, Vung Tau, Horseshoe, and Bamboo military bases. Also some images of local people and scenes. Accompanying information - Correspondence between Sylvia Edwards and Ministry of Culture and Heritage is filed in the Photographic Archive backfile under Edwards, Ken. Source of title - Title supplied by Library Arrangement: Slides have been kept in the same order as Edwards' placed them. Most images were taken in Vietnam between 1968-1969, but 26 were taken in 1967 at Burnham Camp, Canterbury, and the training area near Oxford, Canterbury, known as 'Little Malaya'. Images document military life and include pictures of guns, shells, helicopters, local peoples and scenes, and soldiers in camp. Some images taken at Nui Dat and Vung Tau bases. Accompanying information - Correspondence between Mr Farrell and Ministry of Culture and Heritage is filed in the Photographic Backfile under Farrell, Terence.
