Description: Scrapbook compiled by Graham Eglinton in circa 1980s about the restoration of his cottage in Carterton. Contains black and white and colour photographs, taken by mainly unidentified photographers, of the cottage before and during restoration, and some typed captions. Images show interior and exterior views, the replacement of totara weather boards, re-roofing with cedar shingles, restoration of verandah and fretwork, and installation of a septic tank. Some people are shown. Scrapbook also contains correspondence and newspaper clippings about the cottage, and a scrap of newsprint (dated 1892) that was retrieved from the wall lining. Loose accompanying material includes photographs of a horse-drawn cart, a photograph of the cottage taken by M. C. Duston, mounted on card titled "Settlers cottage", handwritten research notes on the history of the land and the cottage and related area and people, photocopies of newspaper clippings, photocopy of floor plan and proposed alterations in 1983 and news clipping for the 2003 sale of the cottage. Title supplied by library Graham Eglinton bought and started restoring (in 1982) the 1870s house at 1341 High Street in Carterton known as "Daniel Jensens' cottage". The cottage was sold by his son Ray Eglinton in 2003. Description: Cartoon at the top right entitled `Somethink like!', shows two men in a restaurant. The caption below reads: First city clerk (after his holiday), "I got a few days' shooting, too!" Second ditto, "Good sport?" First C.C., "I believe you! Jugged five hares before breakfast, the first morning!!" Engraver's initials - C.K. Untitled cartoon at the top left shows a cab driver and his passenger. The caption below reads: Impatient passenger, "Come, I say, driver, you've no right to creep along at this slow pace. It's too bad. I'm in a hurry, and I insist upon your going faster." Careful driver, "Oh, yes! and frighten the insides out o' their vits, and be 'ad up before the `Beak' for furious drivin'. Why, you ought to be ashamed o' yourself. Drive fast! Not if I know it." Cartoon at the bottom entitled `Repose', shows a man and a woman sitting together on a cliff top. Description: Woman driving a horse drawn carriage and a boy on a bicycle alongside, photographed circa 1905 by an unidentified photographer. The young woman on carriage is Dorothy Broad 1889-1976 . Her brother, Charles V.N.Broad 1887-1974 is riding the bicycle. He was at Nelson College 1904 & 1905. Shows them on a rural road, possibly in the Greymouth district. The woman is dressed in a blouse with a high neck and full sleeves. She wears a hat. The boy wears a cap and a suit and tie (school uniform?). Names provided by descendant of the Broad family, 2022.
