Date: 1890-1941

From: Cowan family: Collection

Reference: MS-Papers-11946-147

Description: Comprises a small publication 'Irish Ballads and Songs' selected by Martin MacDermott, [1890?], and loose papers that were laid in to this incomplete volume, including correspondence, clippings, research papers, and postcards. The material in this folder was enclosed in a bag labelled by James Cowan's family as 'James Cowan Favourite Poetry'. The loose papers include holograph notes and clippings about Irish legends and poetry. Includes a draft article '"Meinself und Gott": When the Kaiser was in Flower' by James Cowan, dated 1941, which includes comical verses and ditties relating to the late Kaiser Wilhelm II. The correspondence includes a letter to James Cowan from his brother Henry Cowan, dated 16 September 1917, on "Y. M. C. A. with the Australian Imperial Force" letterhead, written from Pennings Camp, Tidworth, Salisbury Plains. Other correspondence includes a letter from Christian Keig, dated 18 November 1917, from the Isle of Man, which refers to Henry Cowan's visit to see them; three other letters from family members from Ellerslie (Annie and Willie), dated between 1927 and 1930; and a letter from Johannes Andersen in his role as the Librarian at the Alexander Turnbull Library, dated 26 August 1931. Cowan had marked this letter in pencil and used the back of it to write some song lyrics for "A Toast to Dear Old Erin" and "Tim [?] the Fluter's Ball". Also includes papers relating to the death of Agnes Margaret Cowan in 1930, and a mourning card from Mrs W. A. Cowan and family of Stanley Point, dated 14 November 1913. Also six postcards, three of which are original photographic prints relating to the Cowan family. One of the postcards is from James Cowan's brother Henry, dated 22 December 1909, writing from Stanley Point, and features a wooden villa, which Henry describes as his house. The other postcards feature images of a bearded man sitting in a chair, with a baby on his lap; a view of Stanley Point; the Katesbridge Presbyterian Church; "Our Late Premier, Rt. Hon. R. J. Seddon, P. C."; and "Killarney. Turnpike Rocks Gap of Dunloe". Two photographic prints.
