Description: Album of coloured photographs probably taken by Rhoda McWhannell. None of the people shown are identified; some of the scenes were taken at `Rozel' the home of Frederick and Rhoda McWhannell. Rhoda McWhannell's brother Bill and his wife Inga are identified from another album in the McWhannell sequence (at PA1-q-276). A number of holiday snapshots are taken in the Taupo, Wairakei area, with one view of thermal steam vents at Wairakei, and several of the Waikato River and the Huka Falls. Description: Album of photographs chiefly taken by Rhoda McWhannell. The first part of the album covers a trip Mrs McWhannell took overseas in 1980, travelling to Russia, England, China, India, Kashmir and South Africa. The travel images include scenes in St. Petersburg and Petrodvorets (Russia); with friends in Bramshott (England); in Peking, with Xie Feng, Professor of ornamental plants at Peking, Joy Lee, and Hazel Le Rougetel (writer of books on roses and gardens); scenes at a famous garden which includes bonsai trees, "Zhuo-Zheng Yuan" or "The Humble Administrator's Garden", Suchow (i.e. Suzhou) China; the Taj Mahal, Rajasthan, amd Fatehpur Sikri in India; scenes in Srinigar, including Lake Dal (Kashmir); and photographs of her brother (Bill McCurdie and sister-in-law Inga McCurdie and their daughter Kirsten taken in New Zealand in 1974), and Kirsten and her family in Kloof, South Africa. The following images are all in New Zealand, and are chiefly snapshots of friends and family, some identified, many who are not. They include groups visiting two houses, The Kinder House in Auckland, and The Elms in Tauranga. One sequence shows the 80th birthday celebrations for Dinah Strang held in a garden near Putararu. There is one group of scenes relating to Rhoda McWhannell's brother and his family in the Kloof and Drakensberg Mountains areas of South Africa. Description: Album of photographs relating to Rhoda McWhannell's family and friends. The bulk of the album consists of her travel to South Africa to stay with her brother Bill McCurdie and his wife Inga at their home in Kloof; visiting Mauritius on the way; and areas they visited in South Africa. The latter part of the album is in two sequences. The first shows Rhoda McWhannell's niece Sally Pat McCurdie and her fiance Keith Orange photographed at `Rozel' in November 1976; then their wedding at Auckland Cathedral on 18th December 1976. Description: Family photographs relating to the family of Bill McCurdie (William J S McCurdie), the brother of Rhoda McWhannell. All the images were taken in England, Wales, and Madeira. They include a number of scenes at the christening of Sally Pat McCurdie, daughter of Bill and Inga McCurdie, at Clifford, West Yorkshire. Photographs of Sally Pat McCurdie range from babyhood at the christening, to a child of about 8, riding a horse. A few show Sally Pat's sister Kirstin. Description: Coloured photographs inserted under plastic; probably taken by Rhoda McWhannell. Most of the images show plants, many of them flowering, including natives such as cabbage trees, karaka berries, kowhai flowers, manuka, and kauri gum on a young kauri. Other plants include red currants, water lilies, wild chicory, lasiandra (or tibouchina), gourds, sedum, scarlet nerines, ginkgo trees, dogwood, fuchsias, passionfruit, wych elms and maple trees. One photograph shows the Penn family (Michael and Helen Peen, with their children James and Sally) taken at Hamilton in 1977; and several show Merta Alford (Harriet Mercy Alford), at her home in Cambridge, NZ. Description: Album of photographs relating to family and friends, travel, farming (including horticultural nurseries), and gardens, chiefly taken by Rhoda McWhannell. The front page of the album contains 26 postage stamps from RSA (Republic of South Africa). One group shows individual children of different cultures issued for Christmas 1977; one group shows different varieties of South African plants inclduing proteas and leucodendrons; one image is of the university at Stellenbosch; and two are of historical events at Ulundi and Isandlwana. The first part of the album relates to Rhoda McWhannell's brother and his family. Several are of Bill McCurdie's daughter Kirsten and her children in England, including views of Christ's Hospital School at Lincoln; others are of Bill and Inga McCurdie, with Kirsten and her children Simon and Alex in South Africa. Photographs of `Rozel', the McWhannell farm and tree nursery are the main topic of the rest of the album. These range in time from the 1950s to 1980.
