Four images show a military tank "T27626", with "Galatos" on the turret, at an unidentified location. A group portrait of officers at Waiouru in 1941, and several photographs of Frederick McWhannell, Frank Bethwaite and Neva Morrison wearing military uniform in the early 1940s. Description: Family photographs relating to the McCurdie family. Many are groups of friends and family, some of whom are identified with both Christian and surnames. These include wedding photographs of Marjorie Whitton who married J.W. Nicolls on March 31, 1921 at Oamaru, with Betty and Mary Whitton as bridesmaids. Several views of homes include Woodcroft (the home of Dr John Kinder), Werneth (a house at Atawhai, Nelson), The Moorings (the home of W. & Lucy Churchward at Springlands, Blenheim), and Stonycroft (home of Mr & Mrs Free, at Masterton). One view is of snow in Christchurch city in July 1918, and one shows decorations in the interior of Dunedin Hospital for the visit of the Prince of Wales in May 1920. Description: Kauri seed laid on kauri wood, female and male kauri cones, and Tane Mahuta (giant kauri tree in the Waipoua Kauri Forest). A view of the Waimate North Mission Station Church; three views of a ginkgo biloba tree at the home of John Gilkison at Cambridge; three images taken at the home of Merta Alford (Harriet Mercy Alford) at Taotaoroa showing Sir Michael and Lady Inagh Parsons, visiting New Zealand. The last five images show scenes at a waterlily garden. Marked as being at Waitoa by Rhoda McWhannell, but possibly the Waihi Waterlily Gardens. Description: Album of photographs relating to family and friends, travel, farming (including horticultural nurseries), and gardens, chiefly taken by Rhoda McWhannell. The front page of the album contains 26 postage stamps from RSA (Republic of South Africa). One group shows individual children of different cultures issued for Christmas 1977; one group shows different varieties of South African plants inclduing proteas and leucodendrons; one image is of the university at Stellenbosch; and two are of historical events at Ulundi and Isandlwana. The first part of the album relates to Rhoda McWhannell's brother and his family. Several are of Bill McCurdie's daughter Kirsten and her children in England, including views of Christ's Hospital School at Lincoln; others are of Bill and Inga McCurdie, with Kirsten and her children Simon and Alex in South Africa. Photographs of `Rozel', the McWhannell farm and tree nursery are the main topic of the rest of the album. These range in time from the 1950s to 1980. Description: Views of the gardens and trees at Rozel, the forest farm owned by Mac (Frederick Brayshaw McWhannell) and Rhoda McWhannell. They include the entrance, the Rozel nursery, eucalyptus trees, Judas trees in bloom, a royal oak and oak blossom, and pinus radiata bloom. One image shows Fred, Merta and Robert (Frederick McWhannell, Merta and Robert Alford); and another shows three men identified only by their Christian names (Ross, Jock and Cliff). The last ten slides are entitled "Rozel. Illustrations for journal". They include views of the house, poplars, "Wee Dug" their dog, a croquet match played on Anzac Day 1961, sweet oranges, lemons and lemon blossom, Japanese maples, George (?) and a Judas tree. Description: Collection of photographs, many of which were taken by Rhoda McWhannell. A number of photographs taken in 1976 were published in the Auckland Herald, one published in the Dominion (Wellington), probably taken by Rhoda McWhannell who had a strong interest in photography for many years. Scenes published in the newspapers include one of a team of six Clydesdale horses pulling a plough; one of black swans with their cygnets at the lake in Hamilton; one of a group of four children on a swing, and a young boy on a single swing; and one photograph entited "Happy days", with a Maori workman lying in in the sun in his wheelbarrow during `smoko' or tea-break, with a thermette, a billy and a mug beside him, reading a paper. Photographs of animals at the zoo, lions with cubs, koala bears and two hippopotamuses. Several images of royalty, with the Queen Mother at Hamilton, on her visit to New Zealand in 1958, and Princess Alexandra, visiting in 1971. Several photographs show brides and wedding parties, ranging from Dorothy Shires and Marjorie Nicolls, both married in 1920, to Joan and John McWhannell, married in 1953. A number of farming images, including those published in the Herald, include one of drovers' dogs "after completing four weeks trek with a large mob of cattle" in the Auckland area, mustering in the Craigieburn Range (Southern Alps), and new-born lambs (one a group of four black lambs, and one a white lamb).
