Description: Photographs of the Japaneses capitulation in South East Asia and the Pacific, particularly Bougainville in Papua New Guinea. They include a number of photographs of Japanese prisoners of war being marched to camps; the signing of surrender documents by Australian officers; painting Japan Surrenders on the underside of RAAF plane wings to inform Japanese forces; the announcement of the Japanese surrender by Admiral Lord Louis Mountbatten in Singapore; the Duke of Gloucester, Governor General of Australia, visiting troops; a Japanese tank on fire; and earlier photographs of Allied forces on Bougainville in 1944. The photographs are nearly all official Royal New Zealand Air Force and are captioned on the reverse. Also included with the collection is a copy of New Zealand Freemason frm May 1977 which includes a photograph of the NZEF Masonic Association meeting in 1918 in France.. Intended to be found by Japanese troops in the Pacific, it could then be used to surrender to Allied Forces. The recto has a red and a blue diagonal stripe at top left. Douglas MacArthur was appointed Supreme Allied Commander, South West Pacific Area (SWPA) on 18 June 1942, so this item may have been issued on his behalf. Quantity: 1 colour art print(s). Description: Shows in diagrammatic form the "meeting of Grand Fleet and German High Seas Fleet at Rendezvous by order of Admiral Sir David Beatty. ... At 9.43 a.m. Grand Fleet manoeuvred into escorting position, turning 16 points outwards and increasing speed to 16 knots; course 270 [degrees] (true)" The British ships and their commanders are all named and shown in position, on either side of a line of named German ships shown in the centre led by Commodore Tagert, Rear Admiral von Reuter and Commodore Harder. The weather was misty, the sun dull, visibility 4,500 yards, wind 2-3 [knots] W.S.W; distance between escorting lines - 6 miles. The surrender took place in the Firth of Forth.
