Description: Photographic prints and proof sheets relating to conferences, workshops and events of Ngā Puna Waihanga from 1973 to 2006, taken by John Miller and Gil Hanly and possibly other unidentified photographers. Includes images of the 1973 hui at Te Kaha, taken by John Miller, of Rowley Habib, Paki Cherrington, Emily Karaka, Haare Williams and Sonny Waru; also images of the 1974 hui at Wairoa, by John Miller, of Miki Wairoa, Robin White, and Leslie Boyles. Also some undated photographs of a hui at Parihaka (1994?) and various other hui (possibly taken by Gil Hanly) including images of adults and children playing taonga puoro (Māori instruments), and people performing (haka, music and theatre), weaving, carving and clay work. Also includes some images of artworks, and portraits of artists, including Selwyn Muru, Jacob Scott, and also Te Atairangikaahu, Ngahuia Te Awekotuku, and others; and some images of Para Matchitt, taken by the Los Angeles County Natural History Museum, sent to Averil Herbert in June 1989. Description: Photographs of a range of industries in New Zealand, possibly related to the Christchurch International Exhibition in 1906-1907. Industries include animal related products including wool, from fellmongery to transportation and finally weaving; meat works, including the slaughter house, the mutton cooling room, shipping fozen mutton, the beef cooling room; butter, at the Hautapu Butter Factory, showing butter in the factory, and delivering butter at Ngaruawahia Railway Station; the Waikato Bacon Factory, and pig carcases. Other industries include flax, with scenes showing a flax mill, carting flax to the mill, stripping, washing and drying flax, and also grading hemp and loading bales of it at Auckland wharves; kauri timber industry, from felling the trees, hauling logs by bullock, floating logs over the Wairoa Falls, sorting timber at the mill booms, timber mill on the Wairoa River, and a million feet of sawn timber at the mill. The latter part of the album shows scenes of gold dredging on the Buller Gorge, hydraulic gold-mining at Ross, Westland; coal mining at Brunner; kauri gum diggers and a warehouse storing kauri gum; and finally views of the Sugar Refinery in Auckland, and a warehouse filled with sacks of sugar. Description: Includes - A demonstration by a secondary school student which shows, step by step, the process of preparing threads, setting up, and weaving on a simple handloom of a sort common in New Zealand school art rooms in the 1940s and 1950s. Also a demonstration on how to set up and spin yarn using a drop spindle. Fabrics woven by Doreen Blumhardt. These include a covered chair, a cusion, and a rug. Glove puppets. Teachers participating in an art workshop. Three lazer copies of photographs of English potter, Michael Cardew, in Wellington (probably at Roy Cowan's pottery), 1968.
