Hackworth, Philip Vernon, 1891-1960

Son of James Brooks Hackworth of Queen's Drive, Lyall Bay, Wellington. Worked as a clerk until World War I. Served as a Lieutenant with the NZEF in Samoa, 1914, and as a Captain with D Company of 4th Battalion of New Zealand Rifle Brigade from 1915. Regimental number: 26/16. Description: Photograph album containing photographs of Luxor and Samoa during World War I Views in Egypt include ancient sites at Luxor, Karnak and Thebes, and one of water buffalo by the Nile. The second part of the album starts with a view of the harbour at Noumea showing a number of warships in the distance which are named as HMS Australia, HMS Melbourne, HMS Psyche, HMS Philomel, HMS Pyramus, and the French warship Montcalm. Most of the images in the second part relate to the arrival of the New Zealand Expeditionary Force in Apia, Samoa; the surrender of Samoa by Germany; group portraits of many of the British and New Zealand officers involved in the takeover (most of whom are identified by surname); and scenes of life in Samoa.
