Description: Views of Avarua and scenic landscape views of Rarotonga, many including beaches and the ocean. Public buildings depicted include the Administration building with its seven branched grove of palms, the Post Office and Treasury building, the London Missionary Society house which had just turned 100 years old, Makea's place damaged by a Hurricane in 1943. There are a number of photographs of New Zealanders involved in the administration which include the Police Commissioner Jack Best and his wife. Many of the images relate to L A Hawkes work as Matron of the hospital at Avarua. There are photographs of her and her staff, two taken by Whites Aviation of Auckland, which include Hawkes, her nurses, and the doctor. Another staff group photograph has all the people listed on the back. Four photographs were taken when men and boys were isolated during a measles epidemic, most of the men being in the army. There are two photographs of nurses and a health facility on Atiu, and two of wedding groups. Various photographs show ships, but only the "Taire Taporo" is named L A Hawkes who compiled this album was Matron of the Alofi Hospital in the late 1930s, then became Matron of the Avarua Hospital, Rarotonga, in the early 1940s.
