Hammond, Charles Edward Bruges, 1870-1953

Artist. Born London, departing for New Zealand in 1885. He returned to England in 1887, then departed again for Australia in 1889. He illustrated Robert B Booth's book Five Years in New Zealand, published in 1912. He visited New Zealand again from Australia in 1893-1894, travelling extensively throughout the North and South islands. Spent some time at Highbury, in Auckland and on Otakapo sheep station, Rangitikei. He returned to Australia in 1894, settling in Melbourne in 1895, and later in Tecoma, Victoria. The State Library of Victoria holds a large collection of his sketchbooks, mostly of Australian views (Information from Charlie Hammond's sketch book, introduced by Christopher Fry (Melbourne, OUP, 1980)

Description: view from Tinakori Hill looking over Thorndon, the inner harbour, Te Aro and Mount Victoria. The foreground shows several large houses, including the Queen Margaret College building in Hobson Street, and Thomas Turnbull's large house in Grant Road, later the Italian Embassy. The swing bridge in Hobson Street is also shown part-way along Hobson Street on the left. Katherine Mansfield's birthplace is also in the view, two houses to the left of the swing bridge. Molesworth Street is shown running in a straight line towards the Government Buildings on the right. There are several ships in the harbour and tied up at the wharves. Copy of an original in one of the sketchbooks of Charles Edward Hammond, in the State Library of Victoria. Either a watercolour or an annotated copy of a chromolithograph. The Library holds a copy of the chromolithograph, based on a photograph and catalogued as artist unknown. In 'Five Years in New Zealand' Robert B Booth described the scene thus: 'These men were simply shrewd, energetic men of business, ready without actual disonesty to take every possible advantage of the wants and weaknesses of their fellow men.
