Source of title - Supplied The New Zealand Ballet Company was founded by Poul Rudolph Gnatt in 1953. Gnatt was the first Artistic Director of the Ballet from 1953 to 1962. The Company received a charter from the Queen in 1984 and became the Royal New Zealand Ballet. In 1998 the company moved into its own premises adjacent to the St James Theatre in Wellington. Description: Most of the photographs in this group date from the 1960s and 1970s. They show students in the Manners Street premises doing excersises and ballet positions some at least of which were taken for promotional purposes. Others have been taken on rocks on the Wellington coast and at other outside locations. Other photographs relating to the School show visiting examinors and teachers, and other unidentified persons with the students. Arrangement: Negatives associated with this collection are housed at 35mm, 26338 to 35mm, 26431 The Galina Wassiliewa School of Russian Classical Ballet opened in Wellington, in 1953. Sometime in the late 1950s the school also became the New Zealand Branch of the British Association of Russian Classical Ballet. Galina Wassiliewa retired from running the school in 1987. At the time of her retirement the school was to be taken over by Jane Stephens who had studied with her for 14 years. According to another student, Kieth McEwing, the school continued as a co-operative until about 1992. Galina continued to teach and take private pupils until shortly before her death in 1999.
