Description: A poster-plan map of Auckland Land District no. 1317 depicting 2102 acres of land for sale or lease to discharged soldiers. Made up of two maps, one a cadastral map of the Mangoira Block, indicating numbered sections and including acreages, owner's names and dates handwritten in each section. The other is a locality plan of the area from Kaipara Harbour south to New Plymouth which has an arrow pointing to Awakino. The map includes several paragraphs of text stating conditions of sale, information about the 'second class land', and instructions to applicants. The cadastral map depicts the Awakino North Survey District, with handwritten names listed as CM Raven, MC Pratt, LR Jones, T Cummings, GP Sage, CJ Randell, (earlier owners include Claud Neville de Gray Stevens, S Whitehead). Bordering these properties are the owners WD Black, JR Terrille, SM Black, Thomson, Jones, Cummings, Condon, Beuck, and well as two Native Reserves, and Native owners (Maori land blocks) of Mahoenui no. 4b and Manga - Awakino no. 4. Description: Alfred (Doug) Dibley was born in June 1896. Discusses the land and early Pakeha settlers in the Ngongotaha area near the Mamaku Plateau. Talks about the Karl brothers, Charlie, Jack and Vincent, who came to the area in 1887. Describes how they were descendants of the original Puhoi settlers. Mentions that he married Susannah Karl and Charlie Karl was his father in law. Describes how the land was bought leasehold. Recalls going to World War I and fighting at Gallipoli, Palestine and France where he also contracted spinal meningitis. Describes being on a rehabilitation farm until 1928 when he moved to Oturoa Road. Comments that this was part of the Okoheriki or Patetere blocks. Talks about needing a bore for water. Description: Ev Hill was born in Invercargill in 1926. Recalls a close relationship with his father who had a difficult time in World War I and was given a very poor rehab (rehabilitation) farm after the war. Recalls living in a tent on a farm his father bought in Gorge Road. Describes a religious mother who was a Salvation Army officer and head of the local Temperance Union, regular attendance at church and an absence of fun. Recalls the values of `God and the King' passed on by his parents. Mentions that the Mataura Licensing Trust was `dry' until 1954. Recalls having his first drink of Hokonui whisky, made by local supplier Major Gerald Enright (known as the Major or Del), when he was fourteen. Describes Hokonui as the `local moonshine'. Discusses the Major, his farm and stills, amiable relationship with the community, regular attendance at Mass and friends in high places providing petrol coupons. Comments that everyone, including the Inland Revenue department and the police, knew about the Major's activities. Explains how he became a driver for the Major from 1941-1942 because he wanted a motorcar. Describes how the Major bought him a 1934 Chevrolet for which he worked, doing deliveries of Hokonui around Southland, Otago and Christchurch, until the car was paid off. Notes he worked for him for about a year. Describes the smell of cooking the mash for the alcohol and the process of distilling it. Discusses his delivery routes, safe houses, the excise men, a network of informants and an incident when he transported Constable Bandy to an accident when the car was full of Hokonui. Mentions the Major was later prosecuted. Comments on the legacy of Hokonui. Description: Fred Turner came to Te Pu near Rotorua in 1903 when his father took up land, having previously farmed near Christchurch and Bluff. Describes `bush sickness', a cobalt deficiency in the soil, which damaged the animals. Mentions he was living at Pongakawa breaking in land for his father Charley. Talks about his seven brothers and sisters. Describes leaving school before the age of twelve and cooking for a gang of roadmen working in the area in 1904. Describes walking off the Te Pu property in 1931 having been sued for uncontrollable ragwort. Discusses how it was not explained that the land was on a fifty two year lease and he could have bought it back. Describes how most farmers at Te Pu were given land as part of the World War I rehabilitation scheme. Notes that this was land that farmers had previously walked off. Describes unsuccessful attempts to get compensation from the Government for the land. Talks about land at Hamurana and settlers Jack Catley, Harry Ward and the Dittmers. Talks about marrying Miss Dittmer. Talks about breaking in land for Major Herald in Paradise Valley and then buying and farming land in the Valley. Discusses land at Kaharoa. Discusses the carting of gum by bullock team to Joe Stirling's store at Matakohe. Discusses how young boys were selected to be trained in Maori lore. Describes the special building in which they were given this training. Explains that the Kaipara area is divided in two with the northern (Poutu) half connected to Te Uraohau and the South Head area connected to Te Waiahua. Mentions the Aotea Block. Discusses the meaning of Ngati Whatua and briefly gives the origins of land ownership disputes. Describes early Maori gardens and the growing of kumara. Description: Cadastral maps of rural lands for sale or lease to discharged soldiers. The larger map is of Sections 1 to 9, some numbers having been added in pencil, of Block 3 of the Piopiotea Survey District, adjacent to Ohira South and including the Mangarautawhiri and Pungapunga Streams and a small loop of the Wanganui River. This base map has numbered sections, including acreages, which have been outlined and include owners' names and dates handwritten in each section. The second map is of Section 15, Block XII of the Pirongia Survey District and has 'For this section see Waitomo drawer' handwritten across it. Both of these maps have been struck through with a scribbled line. The Pirongia on the reverse is outlined in red while the Piopiotea map is coloured in red. The larger of the base maps is a plan of sections in the Piopiotea survey district of the West Taupo County. Auckland land district No. 1407. The smaller map is of a section in the Pirongia survey district in Waitomo County. Schedules of this second class land are referred to in a key. The vegetation is described, tramways are included and a small part of the Wanganui River, Mangarautawhiri and Pungapunga Streams are named.
