Gerald, 1916-1997

Teacher, reporter, electrician, cartoonist. Born 21 Aug 1916, Paeroa. Died 25 June 1997. Teacher, Whangarei 1940s. Reporter, electrician and cartoonist, who signed his cartoons 'Gerald'. Served in the Pacific (Norfolk Island) during World War Two as Staff Sergeant Artificer Radar 1942-1944. Lyn Belt from the Ministry for Culture and Heritage reports that they have a letter on record to Megan Hutching from Mrs Margaret J. Allen of 125 Otonga Road, Rotorua, dated 14 November, 2003. Mrs Allen mentions that her husband served on Norfolk Island and in 2001 she and her son took Mr Allen's memorabilia collection to the Norfolk Island Historical Museum. Included in the collection was a written account of his service on Norfolk 'but most of all many caricatures of which he was exceptionally talented'.
