Recalls his childhood in Gisborne; the Tarawera eruption and his mother's death from tuberculosis on the night of the eruption, the possibility of a visit of Te Kooti to Gisborne; attending Napier High School and memories of Te Aute; his study of Greek and Latin and playing cricket and rugby. Discusses attending St John's College, Auckland and pranks played. Describes walking from Napier to Wellington. Comments on the bush around Norsewood and Woodville and Napier before the earthquake. Recalls listening to William Colenso's sermons, and boyhood friendship with Percy Spiller. Describes Samuel and Leonard Williams. Recalls his early interest in Melanesia. Describes time as a headmaster on San Cristobal and experiences with local headhunters. Comments on this practice in relation to weapons supplied by the British. Description: Collection comprises a selection from Foxon's autobiography, `Herd testing in Northland, 1941-1945' in which she describes her training as a tester and practice as one in the Northland-Hokianga region where she was eventually appointed Government tester for Northland. She describes the social life of the areas where she worked, various personalities, the difficulties and the pleasures of the life. The selection on Kopuawhara, a public works railway camp in the northern Hawke's Bay, describes Foxon arriving there as a 13-year-old from Tauranga to be partly in charge of her family, the way of life of a works settlement, social activities and meeting with her future husband. Generally Nelson briefly noted the weather, his main daily activity and occasionally made entries with more information. The diary is incomplete. Nelson describes his life in England prior to emigration on the `Devonshire' in 1863, describes the voyage, continues with his life in New Zealand, subsequent voyage to England in 1864 and his return in 1866. Description: Comprises three letters to Tucker from A Conrad, a parent of the Tarawera School to which Tucker was appointed, in two of which Conrad advises Tucker not to take the position and describes the township and social situation. The third letter declines a request from Tucker for Conrad's children to go on a school outing or to go swimming. Also two letters from the Hawke's Bay Education Board re transgressions on the part of Tucker re leave, and one authorizing her to take a cricket team to Te Haroto school and agreeing with her re swimming instruction being part of school time. Description: Arthur Gordon Black recalls earliest recollections when he was a boy of four at Porangahau (Southern Hawkes Bay) in 1923 living on a soldier's resettlement farm. Mentions grandfather who lived with them and who had served in Afghanistan war. Describes childhood activities, traversing much of the countryside on foot and pony, finding a bird's nest which contained a human skull with a stone axe in it, and which is now in Napier Museum. Also describes Porangahau School and mentions Miss Tracey who taught there from 1924-1945 and Alf Mudgway. Mentions itinerant gentleman who took music. Other aspects of Porangahau discussed includes: Six o clock closing and Maori rule of not being allowed to take liquor away from hotel; 1931 Earthquake; Proficiency exam; lack of co-educational schools; camps for unemployed; Depression; college uniforms and church parades. Describes Wellington Teachers' College which re-opened after the Depression in 1938 and refers to New Education Conference. Mentions Frank Lopdell, Frank Coombs, Walter Scott and Ron Lockhart. Refers to First Labour Government in 1935. Outlines teaching career, commencing with probationary year at Te Awa School followed by sole charge at Tarawera. Explains how sole charge operated. Talks about experience in Air Force, spending three months in Mounted Rifle camp and refers to Sir Andrew Russell. Mentions Conscription. In 1942 joined Navy and talks about trip across Pacific to Canada, referring to `HMS Philomel' and `Capetown Castle'. Mentions headmaster, Bob Foster. Describes 1928 trip by boat via Australia and Java to Singapore, then overland through India to Egypt and on to Greece, Italy and Dover. Talks about being articled to London accountancy firm Justin Miles and describes getting British qualifications. Talks about returning to New Zealand and working in Wellington with Watkins, Hull, Wheeler & Johnson. Refers to Owen Denton. Mentions returning to Britain and marrying in 1936. Description: Comprises two letters from David Borthwick to his family in August and November 1865 when he was a private with the Hawke's Bay Military Settlers. He describes his life as a private, Maori society, the rise of hau-hauism, the place of Maori women in the fighting and also describes the life of a settler during a lull in the fighting. Also includes handwritten transcriptions, notes, extracts from publications, photocopies from official CD records, family tree, map, correspondence, feature article from `Gisborne Herald' (1996) on donor's visit to Gisborne to rectify Makaraka memorial mistake and other papers. Pender describes his research for biographical information re Borthwick (MS-Papers-5907) Source of title - Supplied The letters were written by David Borthwick to his family in Lasswade, Scotland, while he was on active service with the Hawke's Bay Military Settlers. He died at Waerenga-a-Hika in November 1865. The donor, a relative, visited NZ and has done a great deal of research into Borthwick's death, especially to try and have his name added to the Makaraka memorial to those who died in the engagement.
