De Bretts (Taupō, N.Z.), DeBretts Hotel (Taupō, N.Z.), The Terrace Hotel (Taupō, N.Z.)

Located on main road to Hawke's Bay. Completed over three years in late 1880s, opened 1889. Built solely from NZ native timbers and named for silica terraces that surrounded the property. Bought by Dominion Breweries 1964, who changed name to De Bretts following major renovations. Sold to private owners again in 1980, and original name reinstated. Known both as Terrace Hotel and Terraces Hotel on different images.

Description: Views around the Taupo Tongariro area, including Mounts Ngaruahoe and Tongariro, Huka Falls, Aratiatia Rapids, Lake Taupo and Wairakei. There is one image of the Maori interior of Tom Ryan's whare, one of the Terraces Hotel at Lake Taupo, and others of various buildings at the Spa Hotel (Taupo), including the interior of the dining room. This building was the meeting house Te Tiki o Tamamutu, purchased by John Joshua (proprietor of the Spa Hotel) for use as a smoking room and dining room for the hotel guests. Several images show unidentified Maori women in posed groups, or working with flax, and in one case a woman using a treadle sewing machine. An unidentified man is seen, in several images, fishing at pools below the Aratiatia Rapids. Photographs taken by Auckland Star photographers around the turn of the 19th-20th century. Description: An album containing photographs taken in Taupo, Rotorua, and Northland, many with Maori subjects. The images were taken by Leslie Hinge, ca 1900-1909. Many feature short captions written by Hinge giving subjects and locations. Images show various subjects including: - Scenes in the Taupo area, such as an urupa (burial ground) on terraces above the Tongariro River, a waka being used as a bridge near Tokaanu, and the `Serpentine Lake' in the Onekeneke valley. - The Aratiatia Rapids and Huka Falls on the upper Waikato River. - Various geysers and hot pools in the Wairakei Valley. - Maori women at Ohinemutu, cooking and washing clothes. Description: Album belonging to T W (Thomas Watson) Brown. Scenes around New Zealand, many probably taken by Brown, some taken by the New Zealand Government Tourist Department, and some of Lake Te Anau, Lake Wakatipu, and Milford Sound taken by FGR (Frederick George Radcliffe). The first part of the album is mainly images of tramping, camping and hunting in the Orongorongo Range and the Rimutakas, with some of the people identified, including Roley Neale and W A Neale (William Augustus Neale). Other sequences of images are a number in and around Lake Waikaremoana, including several of men fishing showing their catches; climbing in the Tongariro National Park area; views of the small towns Mohaka, Mataatua; areas around Titirangi, Kawau, Hamilton and Tauranga. Description: Album of photographs taken around the Taupo District. Many are contacts from 35mm film; some are prints, taken by John Tenison Salmon between 1955 and 1965. Most of the images are indicative of John Salmon's interest in photography. Examples can be seen in the series of images taken in various lights on the Taupo Golf Links including on misty mornings, the "Picket fence" of fishermen standing at the mouth of the Waitahanui River Mouth on Lake Taupo, a series showing Pohutu Geyser playing, views of the Aratiatia Rapids and Huka Falls, and views of Mission Bay where he spent camping holidays. Three views show Maori ramparts on Motutaiko Island (Lake Taupo), several show dwellings at Waihi, and one shows a group of Maori children in a hot pool at Whakarewarewa.
