Description: Marjorie Gee (nee Williams) born London 1933. Outlines Welsh background of family. Describes living in Pembrokeshire for five years during the War and attending a Welsh-speaking school. Talks of events when war was declared in 1939, and stoic attitude when other children said goodbye to their mothers and were taken by double-decker buses and train to distribution centre at Henley (On Thames). Discusses quilt making and traditional designs; relatives in Wales; religion, going to Chapel in the morning and Sunday School in the afternoon; school which had prayers in English and Welsh on alternative days; flowers and New Zealand pen-friend, Jocelyn Pearn of Opotiki who later came to Britain on a working holiday and both travelling to New Zealand on the `Southern Cross', arriving 1957. Recalls taking a two year course in Chiropody, qualifying at age 18. Recalls life in New Zealand from 1955 ot 1957 and details the return home on the `Southern Cross', spending three years in England before returning to New Zealand in 1960, travelling on the 'Rangitata'. Recalls meeting husband, Dennis Gee, various moves in New Zealand, birth of son in 1963, and moving into current house ten days before the Wahine Storm. Describes the effect of the storm on their house and houses nearby. Recalls first contact with Welsh Society in New Zealand while in Christchurch. Refers to Nan Griffiths and Heulwen Roylands. Talks about the Red Cross rooms and the great importance attached to food. Describes costumes worn for Citizens Carol Service and Welsh Society dinner when Dame Cath Tizard attended. Description: Cartoon shows an unshaven Robert Muldoon peacefully sleeping under a patchwork quilt of tax surcharge, cigarette tax, higher PO charges, mini-budget, tax, incentive kill, high tax rate. He sleeps through the sounds of the bell ringing in parliament summoning members to the chamber for "Division". The quotation from Shakespeare's "Henry VIII" refers to the character of Cardinal Wolsey as described by Catherine in ambivalent words. It suggests that Muldoon's stern taxation measures do not trouble his conscience. Quantity: 1 original cartoon(s). Her bed is covered with a patchwork quilt which includes the word 'GOVT'. The reference is to the way in which proportional representation can have the effect of creating a somewhat patchwork-like government, which in this case includes Winston Peters, Leader of New Zealand First, as Minister of Foreign Affairs outside Cabinet. Description: Three items of promotional material relating the “Making monomono: Ane’s pani-style” exhibition at Toi Pōneke Arts Centre, Wellington, from 13 August to 9 September 2022. The exhibition featured monomono pani (sewn quilts and bedspreads) by maker Ane Nanasi Pahulu, (Faleloa. Ha’apai). Monomono are used by Tongan communities in important cultural ceremonies and rituals and are a form of Tongan koloa (treasures and wealth). Contains one A3 poster with a photograph of Ane Nanasi Pahulu in front of one of her monomono. Also one full colour flier featuring a monomono pattern. Both items were designed by Chora Carleton and advertise the exhibition. Also one A6 folded brochure, designed by Chora Carleton in collaboration with Rachel Yates, who curated the exhibition. The brochure describes the story behind the exhibition, includes biographical information on Pahulu, and has a room sheet and list of works on reverse. Title supplied by Library.
