Burns, Archibald, 1867-1950

Born Kohekohe in 1867. Was a grocer in Thames for many years with his shop located in Albert Street, Mayor of Thames 1905-1909. Chairman of the Auckland Education Board 1924 to1932 and was still a member at his death in 1950. He was a Justice of the Peace for 25 years and served on the Legislative Council from 1934 to 1941. Married Sophia McLaren in Melbourne in 1893. One son and three daughters. Died 22 December 1950.

Description: View looking up Albert Street towards houses on the hill above Upper Albert Street. On the lefthand side of the street in the foreground are the premises of Archibald Burns, grocer. On the opposite side of the street (at an intersection) are the premises of Gillespie and Thomson. Identifiable buildings further down the street are the Queen's Hotel (F Grubb) and at the end of the street the office of the Evening Star.
