Description: Draft, annotated, paper entitled 'Dance Costume in Island Polynesia' and 32 slides intended for a conference, 'Under Capricorn: is Art a European Idea?' The conference was held in Wellington 4-6 March 1994. Most slides are numbered but there are numbers missing from the sequence, which runs from number 2 to number 37. It appears that the slides may have been taken from another larger sequence of slides in order to illustrate the lecture, as one of them is labelled 'SPAF 1972' [South Pacific Arts Festival] and another is labelled 'fig. 17'. Description: Life history interview with Makin Corrie Tekenimatang, born on Banaba (Ocean Island) in the Central Pacific in 1930, experienced occupation under the Japanese on Banaba and Kiribati, and under the post-war migration of the total Banaban population, arrived on Rabi Island in Fiji, December 1945. With her husband, Na Karoro Tekenimatang, also from Banaba, she has raised a family of six children, trained as a school teacher at Nasinu Teachers College, Suva and has been a school teacher 1952 to 1986 at Banaban Primary School in Nuku on Rabi, at Napuka junior secondary schools, specialised in Home Economics at Rabi High School and taught with the Women's Interest Group which she founded on Rabi in the mid 1960s. Nei Makin researched and taught te karanga, the traditional dance performed by the Banaban Dancing Group at the first of the quadrennial Pacific Arts Festivals held Suva 1972, and continued to produce that iconic dance for important ceremonial occasions including arts festivals and the South Pacific Games. She was involved with a Land Survey trip to Bananba in 1947 which was part of an official attempt to estimate native landholdings prior to the decades of mining by the British Phosphate Commission and revisited Banaba in 1997 on the Homecoming Trip, her first visit for 50 years. From 1996-2000 Nei Makin served as the first woman member elected to the Rabi Council of Leaders, and in 2005 co-edited a book of stories by Banabans across several generations, which marked the 60th anniverasay of the Banabans'arrival in Rabi, on 15 December 1945.
