Description: Shows a man in a turban and Eastern robes, with a thin figure of Death looking over his shoulder, a large spider web behind him. The man holds a wine goblet in one hand and the hair of a naked woman in the other, as she kneels before him. At the far left is a tall candlestick on which an owl is perched. This is an illustration of the following quotation, translated by E Powys Mathers: "O sons of men, / Lean death perches upon your shoulder / Looking down into your cup of wine, / Looking down on the breasts of your lady. / You are caught in the web of the world / And the spider Nothing waits behind it. / Where are the men with towering hopes? / They have changed places with owls. / Owls who lived in tombs / And now inhabit a palace". This quotation was previously on a backing sheet of this drawing. This is an original drawing for Bensemann's book "Fantastica", published in 1937. The Mathers poem is reproduced with the image, in the book. Inscriptions: Recto - beneath image - [Lines from the poem quoted in "Fantastica", translated by E Powys Mathers] Quantity: 1 drawing(s). Physical Description: Ink drawing, on sheet 573 x 408 mm. Provenance: Purchased in 2003. Provenance is directly through family members.
