Description: Folder comprises letter from Laracy to Rhys Richards detailing Laracy's article on Captain William Ross. Accompanying the letter are copies of newspaper articles relating to Ross, and an annotated copy of a transcription of `The diary of Captain William Ross'. Laracy notes the provenance of the transcription and the diary itself are both unknown. The original diary was written in 1927 and records Ross' career as a sailor, trader and captain in the South Pacific. Ross traded between Auckland and Niue, Samoa, Tonga and the Cook Islands. For 25 years he captained the barquentine Ysabel between Auckland and Niue. Ross was also involved with Mr A Tindall in the purchase of property and trading stores in the Tongan group of islands. Also a photocopy of a newspaper cutting relating to Falcon Island in the Tongan group of islands. Source of title - Transcribed by Library Captain William Ross sailed in the South Pacific as a mariner and trader for sixty years (1866-1926). Quantity: 1 folder(s). 0.01 Linear Metres. Description: Research papers relating to Captain Matthew T Clayton including a 29 page handwritten account [Cowan has annotated with 'written by Captain Clayton Oct 1920'] which has been titled 'Sandlewooding' by Cowan, plus two pages of pencil drawings including one of the Statesman stuck on a mud bank. Also a handwritten letter to Cowan from Captain Clayton, also is a narrative of 'Sandlewood Cruises in the Western Pacific' dated 1920. Around a group at left are boxes of Morton's mixed pickles, London; W Gregg & Co Black pepper Dunedin, Rum, and Keen's Mustard. One man prepares a fire with a cooking pot; he wields a knife with the name "Pampa" written on it. Two others look on as a central figure in grass skirt and top hat extends his hand in greeting towards a European man at the far right, disembarking from a boat with a bag labeled "Carr... Mission". However the top hatted figure holds a weapon behind his back. Seated on the palm-lined beach, possibly to attract the European, sits a smiling native woman.
