Auckland stockbroker, known as the "father of the Auckland Stock Exchange". He was born in Belfast, Ireland, on 16 April 1849, the son of Francis Holmes Hull, of a military family. He came to Auckland with his parents in the 'Bluejacket' landing on 16 March 1860. His father took up land at Pukekaroro, and was elected MHR (Member of House of Representatives) for Marsden in 1860. When Francis Hull was 25 years old he started monthly cattle sales in northen townships, but this was not a success. After a few years he came to Auckland and started a business as Francis Hull junior, kauri gum merchants, and for some time did a large export trade. He was joined in the business by his eldest brother and went into the general wholesale business under the title of Hull Brothers. This business was given up in 1884, and Hull started as a stockbroker; he continued this for the rest of his life. See obituary, Auckland star, 22 May 1933 (in NZ Obits cuttings, vol 19, pp 1045-6)
