New Zealand Automobile Association

AA (Automobile Association)

In early May 1903, Dr George Thomas Humphrey de Clive Lowe posted a letter to approximately 20 motoring enthusiasts, asking if they would be interested in starting an automobile club. A couple of weeks later, on 26 May 1903, Dr de Clive Lowe and six others met to discuss a proposal and by the end of the evening they had formed the Auckland Automobile Association (AAA).

On 4 September 1903, the inaugural meeting of the Canterbury Automobile Association (CAA) took place. Following closely behind in 1904 was Nelson, and in 1905 Otago and Wellington associations were formed. By 1930 there were at least 15 associations: Wanganui (1907), Hawkes Bay (1911), Wairarapa (1912), Marlborough (1913), South Canterbury (1913), South Taranaki (1914), North Auckland (1915), Oamaru (1923), New Plymouth (1924) and Manawatu (1928).

Automobile Associations of New Zealand :Motor taxation; where the petrol tax goes! Issu...

Date: 1933

From: [Ephemera of quarto size relating to petrol, motor fuels, petroleum industry, drilling]

By: New Zealand Automobile Association; Sheat, William Alfred, 1899-1982

Reference: Eph-B-PETROL-1933-01

Description: Pamphlet protesting about the petrol tax levied by the "George & Gordon Garage" (ie the government of George Forbes and Gordon Coates). The pamphlet protests that motor cars are taxed as luxury items, with customs duty being about half the cost of the imported vehicle (A diagrammatic picture of a Ford illustrates this). A picture of a bank note on the front cover shows that 3/4 of petrol tax goes for national purposes, leaving only 25% for the upkeep of roads. The back cover shows that the petrol tax is three times the landed cost of a shipment of petrol. Dated by the model of car (Ford 8), and by the reference to the "George & Gordon Garage" - the government of George Forbes and Gordon Coates. The Evening post of 7 March 1933, page 7 reports: The part played by the automobile clubs of New Zealand in obtaining from the Government a concession of a penny per gallon in petrol tax was referred to at last night's meeting of the executiveof the Wellington Automobile Club. The chairman of the executive, Mr. E. A. Batt, said he did not think motorists as a whole realised the savings that were being effected for them by the automobile clubs". Quantity: 1 colour art print(s) on folded pamphlet. Physical Description: Letterpress on folded sheet, 344 x 217 mm. Provenance: Donated by Bill Sheat in 2005, from the collection of William Alfred Sheat.
