Description: Album of photographs chiefly taken by Albert Percy Godber, relating to his family, his work and his interests. Family photographs include portraits of his wife (Laura) and two children (William and Phyllis), and scenes of their home in Whiteman's Valley Road, Silverstream; views of the Hutt Valley including large numbers of cars travelling to Trentham Racecourse, and the Hutt River. Another group of images relate to a holiday at the Mendip Hills Homestead in Canterbury, with scenes of farm life, including haymaking, merino sheep, and farm buildings. During their stay in the South Island Godber also took photographs of Dunedin (including the Ross Reservoir, Otago Boys' High School, Seacliff Mental Hospital, the 1926 Dunedin Exhibition, and the Hillside Railway Workshops); Invercargill (including the Invercargill Railway Workshops); Stewart Island, Moeraki, Tuatapere, Waiau River, Oamaru and Port Chalmers. Various railway stations in Canterbury and Otago, the Burnside Iron Mills, and the Rosslyn Mills. Godber was a volunteer fireman with the Petone Fire Brigade with the album including views of the building, groups of firemen, fire engines and other fire fighting equipment, and a building in Petone damaged by fire. In his work with New Zealand Railways, mainly at the Petone Railway Workshops, he took interior photographs of various buildings, including the Machine Shop and finishing benches, the engine room, lathes, boilers, and fitting shops. He also took photographs of many of the steam engines that were built and worked on at the workshops. One scene shows a group of men watching a fight. Many images show his interest in logging railways, particularly in the Piha, Karekare, Anawhata area. Scenes of logging camps, various methods of transporting logs including bullock teams, logging trains, and dams created and then tripped to send logs down by river, and timber mills. Other topics covered in Godber's photographs are scenes at Maori marae and meeting houses, with some of the people identified; Maori carving and rafter designs; beekeeping, and gold mining. Description: Album of newspaper and magazine cuttings, black and white photographs, and prints of colour illustrations. Mostly connected with New Zealand native trees, and the timber industry. There are pages dealing with different native trees, and then with the various processes involved in felling the trees; transportation, including horse-drawn, logging railways, and water-born timber using dams; and timber mills. On page [7] of this album there are three personal photographs taken by John Logan Campbell from his home in Parnell, used as Christmas cards in 1900 and 1901; on page [27] is a print of a photograph originally taken by Albert Percy Godber, showing a poster in Maori warning against carelessness in lighting fires in the bush (see full information about the original, in the record at APG-1454-1/4-G).

Description: Lilian Valder born Hamilton. Father worked in sawmilling. Recalls earliest memory being that of Ellis & Barnard (sawmilling firm) being burned down on her fourth birthday. On completion of secretarial course worked for father who by this time was in partnership with Dan Bryant in a business scheme, helping farmers' sons buy farms. Explains how they organised a fund and raised money. Recalls that sister was helped by scheme to buy farm (scrub land) in Northern King Country where they (Lilian and sister) managed sheep and cattle and made it a very viable farm. Describes attitudes of community which regarded them as freaks. Talks about problem with land and what was known as Bush Sickness which actually turned out to be a Cobalt deficiency - reference to the Cawthron Institute in Nelson. Talks about retirement at Waihi Beach and hobbies and interests. Discusses involvement with Forest and Bird Society and interest in preserving native bush to the extent that it can be preserved in New Zealand. Explains how it was her father, a timbermiller, who first joined her in Forest and Bird Society almost from its inception. Describes Trust she set up, proceeds to be divided in four ways of which Forest and Bird is one. IHC and CCS also benefit from the trust.
