Competed in athletics while attending Timaru Boys High School and in his final year (1933) he set a new world record for a school boy in the 1 mile with a time of 4m 26.8s. Boot competed in the British Empire Games in 1936 and 1938, winning a gold medal in the 880 yard race and a bronze medal in the 1 mile.
