Maori Battalion on the way from New Zealand to Egypt

Description: Personal record of a soldier in the Maori Battalion of the journey from New Zealand to Egypt, Second World War. Begins with troops lined up on the show grounds at Palmerston North on the 31st of April 1940. Troops embarked on the 1st of May 1940 and sailed for Fremantle, Australia, and were there by the 8th of May. There are photographs of Fremantle Harbour, Perth University, and Maori soldiers with Australian friends. Also photographs of Maori soldiers on deck of ship. The troops sailed from Femantle in a convoy that included the liner transports, Queen Mary, Aquitania, Empress of Japan, Empress of Britain, Mauretania, and Andes. They were in Capetown on the 16 May 1940, and Freetown, Siera Leone on the 23 May. The convoy arrived at Greenock on the Clyde River, Scotland, on the 6th of June 1940. From the 8th of June 1940 to the 2nd of January 1941 the troops were stationed in the south east of England where they did battle training. The places include Bognor, Aldershot, Bostling Green, and Guildford. On the 3rd of January the troops embarked on the Athlone Castle, part of a large convoy of transports and warships bound for Egypt, which they reached on the 1st of March 1941. There are two panoramic views of the convoy, and many photographs of the Maori troops on board the Athlone Castle. In Egypt photographs show the troops landing, the camp at Maadi, gardens at Helwan, training in the desert, views of Cairo, and tours to the pyramids. The last part of the album are photographs of Capetown and its surroundings, other unidentified places, and more snaps taken in Egypt. Quantity: 1 album(s).

Description: Mounted photographs of: French colonial troops in an allied parade in Tunis after the campaign in North Africa; the Third Echelon farewell parade in the grounds of Parliament, Wellington; three soldiers sharing a cigarette in the desert with mosquito netting draped round the head to protect against flies; a New Zealand truck on the way to Azizia, Libya in January 1943; a New Zealand signaller helping a linesman from the Free French forces at the top of a telegraph pole; two transport ships berthed at Queen's Wharf, Wellington used to carry the First Echelon to the Middle East; a soldier leading a mule pack through the cactus used to supply front-line troops in the hills of Tunisia; an axis supply ship sunk in the port of Tripoli taken when the New Zealanders entered in January 1943; Maori infantry on the back of a truck entering Tripoli; and the road to San Marino with large white crosses painted on the hillside to mark its boundaries. Description: Ten interviews with Māori who served in the Vietnam War. The interviewees were born between 1935 and 1949, and belong to iwi from rohe across Aotearoa/New Zealand. Includes interviews with Paul Kimiora Carr, Roy Tutewhakaiho Matakatia Komene, Roger Carew Aritaku Maaka, John Edwin Heremaia Marsh, William (George) Mathew, Anthony (Andy) Leon Mokaraka, Albert Sidney (Sid) Puia, Rangi Mathew Rata, James (Jim) Taia, and Charles Romi (Bunny) Tumai. Includes printed biographical forms, printed abstracts, printed pre-interview questionnaires, digital recordings, photographs, and other documentation. Awards/funding - Funded by an Award in Oral History from the Ministry for Culture and Heritage, 2006. Between June 1964 and December 1972 around 3,500 New Zealand military personnel served in South Vietnam. All of the New Zealanders who served were regulars or had enlisted in the Regular Force to join V Force - New Zealand's army contingent in the US-led coalition. Māori participation in the war was substantial. The interviewees served with many of the New Zealand units deployed in Vietnam; some served with Australian units. Description: Margaret Isabel Parata born Taieri 1915. Recalls attending Archfield boarding school, training as a nurse at Dunedin Hospital and travelling through Canada and America to England. Backgrounds becoming an army nurse, and describes months spent at 1st New Zealand General Hospital in England (Pinewood, near Cawthorne). Talks about the Maori Battalion and comments on `these young bashful boys' also mentions their singing and other customs of gathering local thistles from the English fields. Recalls further duty in Egypt, travelling on the `Georgic' and working in a tent hospital at Helmieh which she describes. Was sent back to Crete and describes conditions of journey. Refers to Peter McIntyre's drawing of Crete where the parachutists landed. Back to Egypt again and nursed at Helwan until the end of the war, travelling home on the 'Oranje'. Describes hospital which was a converted Edwardian hotel. Talks about pneumonia patients, lack of drugs and M & B medication. Recalls marriage to husband, Hone, being married by Jack Sommerville. Description: Herbert Abraham explains the Lebanese origins of his fathers surname, Facoorey, why the family moved to Te Araroa and describes his education at Te Araroa primary and Gisborne Boys High School. Details the family store at Te Araroa, relationship with Henderson family, friends in Te Araroa, employment after he left school scrub cutting at Horoera, milking cows and then at the Gisborne Freezing works, and talks about his father leaving and going to Melbourne. Describes in detail his experiences in the Maori Battalion during WWII. Includes discussion of enlisting as Maori even though he is not Maori, training at Papakura camp, farewells, men he was in the Battalion with, men who commanded the C Company and the D Company, officers, bayonet charges, haka, medals, the campaigns he was involved in, promotions through 5th reinforcements, C and DC Company and to HQ, selling of army equipment, rations, rustling food, clothing, being in the rations truck and in charge of food, the men who got killed and how he coped with the memories after the war by mainly blocking them out. Also talks about the campaign in Italy, relationship with Italians and coming home after the war. Comments on the differences between WWI and WWII for the Maori who fought and the number of men who went to WWII from Te Araroa. Mentions that he was selected for the East Coast Maori rugby team but was not able to play because he wasn't Maori. Talks about coming home to Te Araroa, working at the family store and then in the taxi business, his marriage to Dawn Smith and daughter.
