Date: 1965

From: Lodge, Nevile Sidney 1918-1989 :[Archive of original cartoons for the Evening Post and Sports Post, 1941 to 1988]

Reference: B-137-289

Description: Shows five different vignettes where the newspaper headline is taken differently from its intention, mainly as a result of a pun: Bruce McLaren the motor racing driver actually drops out through a hole in his car (where the intended meaning was that he withdrew from the race) "Hacks checked at Trentham" shows a man checking his horse into a cloakroom counter (like a hat check) whereas the intended meaning was that some horses in the race at Trentham Racecourse were held back by the horses in front. A tennis player discusses his lack of success in betting at horse races; he had "picked all the first leg winners and missed out on all the second legs". First leg refers to the first race on the programme, and second leg refers to the second race, etc. Palmerston rider wins a lolly scramble, rather the the motorcycle "scramble" race that was intended. A cyclist is showing "fielding" a cricket ball and calling out "Howzat?", whereas the meaning was that the cyclist won an event at the town of Feilding. Quantity: 1 original cartoon(s). Physical Description: Ink drawing and collage 430 x 293 mm, on sheet 482 x 312 mm.
