Date: 2009
From: Winter, Mark, 1958- : Digital cartoons published in the Southland Times and other papers
Reference: DCDL-0011764
Description: Shows an enormous orangutan in the Auckland Zoo. Text reads 'monkey puzzle' and suggests that 'Ned' has a dilemma and finds it hard to choose between saving his native rain forests and being able to resist a 400g block of Cadbury's dairy milk chocolate which tastes so much better than a bunch of bananas. Refers to the decision by Auckland Zoo to pull Cadbury's products from their shelves because of Cadbury's decision to add palm oil to its chocolate. Palm oil production devastates rainforest in Southeast Asia thus depriving orang utan of their habitat. Quantity: 1 digital cartoon(s).

Godwits arriving in the South Island herald the advent of spring! 18 September 2009
Date: 2009
From: Hubbard, James, 1949-: Digital caricatures and cartoons
Reference: DCDL-0012367
Description: A woman reads a newspaper report about a dangerous palm kernel cargo protest by Greenpeace that endangers lives. A television programme delights at the arrival of the godwits in the South Island that herald the advent of spring and a man passing by comments to himself 'so do the dimwits'. Refers to the arrival of the godwits that fly from their breeding grounds in Alaska and arrive in New Zealand in late September, during the spring, to fatten up over the southern hemisphere summer. The reference to the protest is about Greenpeace protesting against Fonterra's importation of palm kernels for use as stock feed because of its role in the destruction of rainforests, predominantly in Malaysia and Indonesia. Up to 14 Greenpeace protesters boarded the Hong Kong-registered freighter East Ambition, lashing themselves to cranes and the anchor, preventing the ship from docking. Colour and black and white versions available Quantity: 2 digital cartoon(s).

Date: 2009
From: Moreu, Michael, 1969-: [Digital cartoons published in the Christchurch Press and Fairfax Media]
Reference: DCDL-0011803
Description: In five frames a group of corporate managers try to solve the problem of how to retain the habitat of orangutans while at the same time getting the palm oil they need for their chocolate. In the end they decide to battery farm the orangutans because apparently the fat of apes improves the taste of the product as much as palm oil so in this way they will save the tropical forest habitat of the orangutan at the same time as increasing numbers of orangutan. There is a scandal because Cadbury's have decided to add palm oil to their chocolate which endangers the rain forest habitat of orang-utan in Southeast Asia. Quantity: 1 digital cartoon(s).
