Description: A version of the drawing by Dodd, but the image is reversed. Shows a scene in which Captain Cook has already been killed, and is being dragged away from the water's edge by two Hawaiian men, in a face-down position. He appears to be dressed entirely in white. A number of Hawaiians seem to be fighting over the dagger with which he has been stabbed. Cook's men, on board a rowboat just offshore, are helping others who have fled the scene into the boat. Description: Photographs of the Royal Naval Reserve crew on board the British mine sweeper 'HMT Columbia' (a hired trawler) during World War I, taken by deck hand Thomas Gale between 1914-1915. Each photograph is captioned. Images show day to day life on deck including a sailor looking at the damage to the ship after being in action at Zeebrugge, Germany; men demonstrating how they fire at mines with rifles; a group learning wire splicing; enjoying apples from Canada; and the ships mascot, a dog 'Prince' - who was not on the final voyage. Three men are identified: Signal boy Robert (Bob) Clive and the Telegraphists George Clarkson and William Silvester. The prints are cut from an album compiled by Thomas Gale. Relationship complexity - All of these photographs, and a two more, are published, with other information, in Len Gale's book Mine sweeping 1914-1918 : a survivors tale/ (Auckland [N.Z. : Len Gale], 2011). It includes a list of the crew members (also available at http://www.naval-history.net/xDKCas1915-05May.htm accessed 14 Dec 2011) who died on the 'Columbia' which may enable further identification of the men in the photographs. The 'HMT Columbia' was struck and sunk by a German torpedo boat in the North Sea near Oostende, Belgium, on 1 May 1915. Thomas Gale was the only survivor.
