Description: Photographs of Samoa taken between 1905 and 1936, some taken by Samoan photographer Alfred James Tattersall, many by unidentified photographers. One photograph is not related to the rest, showing two young women flautists from Highcliff School, Dunedin, winners of a Dunedin competition in 1918 (P 90) The earliest ones, taken in 1905, show the damage caused by a volcanic eruption, and show lava pouring into the sea. The rest of the images are related to Donald Alexander John Rutherford, headmaster at Ifi Ifi School (Leififi School) from 1919, becoming Superintendent of Schools from 1923 to 1936. There are many scenes which include his family, with his wife and four children (including Alexander Mathieson Rutherford). Many of the scenes show school activities, including the ceremonies surrounding the opening of the new school at Avele; the schools at Malifa, at Ifi Ifi, Poutasi, Aleipata and other districts; sports teams; school parades, including boy scouts linked with the schools; and groups of teachers, both European and Samoan. General views of Samoa include the construction of a fale, the interior of a fale; fishing; cocoa beans and their harvesting and drying; copra industry, with Solomon Island workers; and sowing cotton seed. Several images show the celebrations for George V's birthday; school breakup feasts; and the farewell flotilla of canoes when the Rutherford family left Samoa in 1936. Social activities of the Europeans in Samoa include tennis, large groups of bowlers, and garden parties at Vailima, the Governor's residence. Description: Photographic postcards relating to the Wild family taken circa 1919-1920s by a range of photographers. Postcards from Samoa: one of the Government Building in Apia, taken by 'RJT' and one of Samoan girls preparing kawa (kava). Both with annotations on reverse addressed to Mrs H A Wild and Mr Wild of Invercargill. Two postcards show the waterfront scene of Greymouth taken by Frederick George Radcliffe. The two postcards together form a panorama. One postcard of a country church titled 'Leithfield, The Church of England'. Title supplied by Library Arrangement: Postcards arrived loose to the Library. Originally part of photograph albums. Donor is the niece of Philip, Bert and Cyril Wild. Postcards would have been sent by her three uncles, Philip, Bert and Cyril Wild to their mother in Invercargill. Philip was employed from ca 1923 to 1930 by the Treasury in Samoa, Bert worked for Customs in Greymouth, and Cyril taught at Leithfield Primary School in the late 1920s to 1930s. Description: Album of photographs relating to life in Samoa, particularly associated with the British Consulate, in part taken by Thomas Andrew, and in part probably taken by Thomas Berry Cusack Smith, creator of this collection. Images include portraits of British men and women linked with the consulate (some in fancy dress at dances, or in theatrical performances), one of William Churchill (United States Consul-General in Samoa). Also portraits of Samoans, including several of young Samoan women, King Malietoa, and members of the Vaiala Polo Team (and the British Consulate Polo Team). Two group portraits at the end of the album include Richard John Seddon, his wife Louisa and two daughters, King Malietoa, and the Bishop of Wellington, Frederick Wallis and his wife Margaret. Other Titles - British Consulate, Samoa Thomas Berry Cusack Smith was British Consul in Samoa in the late 1880s until 1898. Description: Compiled by S Percy Smith. Album includes 42 pages of photographs of Samoan scenery, towns, buildings, and portraits. Photographers represented include Burton Brothers, Thomas Andrew, J Davis, and A & W. As well as Samoa, this album includes photographs of men and one woman in the Solomon Islands; their ceremonial dress, weapons, and a house with an ornately woven patterned wall, and thatched roof. The last two photographs show men with weapons, wearing masks. Several photographs show images relating to Robert Louis Stevenson. One (on page 32) shows "R L Stevenson & party". Stevenson and his wife with European and Samoan men and women are seen standing at the back of a large group on the steps of the verandah at Vailima. The verandah is draped with fern leaves. The group seated in front on the stairs includes Samoan men, mostly holding axes, and a group of sailors holding musical instruments.
