Description: Correspondence between members of the Olsen family resident in Christchurch, Lyttelton, Wellington and New Plymouth (1858-1860). They are Frederick and Eleanore Olsen writing from his `establishment the Welllington Coffee House Lambton Quay' to his brother and sister, Mr and Miss Chapell, and friends; Elmett H and Edward Olsen of Wellington and Lyttelton writing to their uncle and aunt; a daughter writing to her mother from Lyttelton; and Edward Olsen, New Plymouth, writing to his cousin. The correspondents write of their family situations, their experiences following immigration, the costs of living and difficulties of finding work, Wellington's terrain and frequent earthquakes, and their changing family circumstances. In 1981 the New Zealand Government decided to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the battle of Crete by giving Cretan families who had assisted New Zealand soldiers during the Second World War a special dis pensation to immigrate to New Zealand. The Houdalakis family was the first to arrive under this scheme. The father of Eftyhia Olymbiou and Evengelos Houdalakis hid four New Zealand soldiers in his home for six months at considerable risk to himself finally taking them to the Port of Souya 25 kilometres away where they escaped to the Middle east on a small boat.
