Description: Includes photographs of Balmoral Camp, near Lake Tekapo, a military camp with tents and wooden huts in 1955. A group portrait of soldiers at Bulford Camp during World War I. A group portrait of men in military uniforms in front of a roll of honour for the South African War. The uniforms and cap insignia vary and two civilians are included in the group. According to a typed list which was with the file print (but has been included with this print) the occasion was an annual conference of senior officers of the New Zealand military forces in 1913. Description: Photograph album containing prints taken and collected by Thomas Ambrose Stewart, during his service during World War Two with the 4th Field Ambulance in North Africa and the Middle East. Album includes photographs that show Burnham Camp (including one print showing flooded tents), troopships departing from Port Lyttelton, and photographs taken at sea during Stewart's voyage to Egypt (mainly views of other troopships in the convoy). There are also photographs of ships and wharfs taken at various ports visited on the journey. A series of photographs show World War One memorials and war graves from the Sinai campaign. Egyptian scenes feature Lowry Hut YMCA (Maadi), felucca boats on the Nile River, a felucca in a lock, buildings and sites alongside the Nile (Giza Pyramids, Luxor Winter Palace, the Great Sphinx of Giza), camel rides, local people, and street scenes. Photographs from Jerusalem feature religious sites such as the Garden of Gethsemane, Church of Saint Mary Magdalene, Dome of the Rock, and a series of images show the interior of a church or churches. Also photographs of the King David Hotel and old city. Images from Alexandria show street scenes, beach scenes, and buildings; these are largely comprised of a commercial set of photographs. There are a large number of photographs of military subjects with many likely taken in Tunisia. These include desert scenes, military training, camp sites, marching drills, field hospitals, and ambulances, tanks, and other military vehicles. Scenes from the aftermath of conflict including crashed aircraft, injured soliders onstretchers, burnt out trucks, and shipwrecks. Photographs show unidentified soldiers, largely in informal portraits or while working or relaxing. Stewart appears in a number of photographs including standing with another man in a trench (Stewart has no shirt on) and in a group portrait taken at Temple Mount (standing on far right of main group). John Alexander McMillan, Carville Munro, and Dennis Rodney Waight also appear in some images. Photographs from an unidentified zoo show animals including a giraffe, rhinoceros. pelicans, and the zoo gardens. Working animals, such as a convoy of [mules?] carrying branches. Beach scenes show wrecked ships, swimmers, beach chairs, and the Australian Club Canteen Services.
