Childhood in the Kumeu-Huapai district oral history project

Description: Interviews with a number of people who spent their childhood in this rural district north west of Auckland City during the 1910s and 1920s. The area was long used as a portage by Maori between the Kaipara and Waitemata harbours. Pakeha initially settled during the mid to late 1800s and, after forest and gum clearance, the area was slowly developed into dairy farms. In 1915 nearly 5000 acres of scrubland at Kumeu North (renamed Huapai) were subdivided as orchards, mixed farms and weekend homes. There was an influx of new residents (including weekend only residents) following this. Huapai School opened in 1919. Description: Birds eye view of central Auckland - "This view is compiled and drawn as from a point one thousand feet above and one hundred feet to the rear of the Hospital during the year 1885 and part of 1886 by George Treacy Stevens, Auckland, N. Z.". All the streets are named and every building is shown, as well as the wharves and part of the harbour. Grafton Road, the hospital and part of Auckland Domain dominate the foreground, and the view extends beyond St Mary's Bay (West Haven boat harbour) in the north-west, a block beyond Union Street in the west, to the beginning of Karangahape Road in the south-west and to Judges Bay and part of Hobson Bay in the east. One friend, Fan Mack, is well represented but also includes portraits of Audrey Nolan, Avis Danby, Joyce Demler, Bernice Laird, Pearl Kimber, and Joan Dods. Also includes photographs of Misses Bowell, Chadwick, Yates, Clouston, M Green, and D Bowie, who perhaps were teachers at the school. Also includes images of Northland including Dargaville from the air, church in Pahia, Kaihu Creek, Stone Store, Northern Wairoa Bridge, and Wizard Smith and his car. Description: Cadastral map of the Parnell Borough of Auckland, from Mechanics Bay, St. Georges and Judges Bay down to Hobson's Bay, including the Waikato and Kaipara railway routes. Shows the Parnell rise and the road to Manukau and Epsom, Gladstone and Avenue Rd, St. Stephens, Ayr and Brighton, as well as the Domain. Sections 1-4 and 95 are shown, and numbered blocks and lots within each section. Grammar School, St Stephen's School, an orphan home, a cemetry, a sawmill the Alexandra Hotel, Windsor Castle. a cattle market and reclaimed land are also shown. A private road is shown off St. Georges Bay Road leading to the only named property, that of Mr Aitken, Section One, (84) - 538.
