Description: Shows road bordered by trees, perhaps Mourea, near Rotorua. In the background is a house. The trees appear to be conifers, perhaps fir trees, (although they could also be rimu) and despite the inscription 'New Zealand' below the work, it is possible that this is not a New Zealand scene. On the verso is a monotone wash of a cabbage tree (A-253-015) The attribution to Barraud is not certain Inscriptions: Recto - bottom right - title and date in pencil. Description: Shows a fountain playing in the foreground in a formal garden with young conifers planted inside a picket fence. Beyond the garden are cows grazing, a stone wall at right with mature trees, the roof of a shed at the waterfront, Waitemata Harbour with a steamship, a sailing ship and a yacht and Rangitoto in the background Harry Cobley was married to Louisa Elizabeth Penman. Cobley's house, in Devonport, was demolished in the 1970s although the stone wall in this view was left partially standing. (see TL 3/1/1, 29/11/82, 9/12/82, 15/12/82, 22/12/82, 5/1/83, 3/2/83, and 10/2/83). Reproduced as a Turnbull Library Print, one of the group called Hoyte's Victorian Auckland, in 1982. Description: Tall conifers to the right, part of a castle on top of a hill at a lower level, looking down into a valley surrounded with steep hills. May show Switzerland and the Rhone Valley, rather than the Rhine Another very similar work, (A-196-010, The Rhone Valley) lends support to the idea that this may be the Rhone valley.
