They were members of a large party of watermen brought out to New Zealand as a group, generally referred to as the Deal Boatmen. Letters from Edward, who arrived on the "Star of India", 1874, comment on social conditions, and life on South Island railways, 1877-1912 (with diary of voyage from Lyttelton to UK on the SS `Turakina', Jul-Aug 1906); also his wife's and family's letters 1914-1958. Letters from James, comment on Dunedin, 1889-1892, giving first impressions, prices, trade union matters and working conditions. Letters from Frederick describing voyage to Lyttelton on the `Olive' in 1878, first impressions of Canterbury (later of Melbourne). Also letters of family members in South African War, World Wars I and II, and later papers; with notes, photographs and genealogical information. Description: Collection comprises 12 wartime letters from Sergeant Walter McIntyre from the period of his military deployment in Europe addressed to members of his family in New Zealand. The letters provide details of the voyage on the 'Turakina' from Wellington to Plymouth, England, and descriptions from the Western Front in France, with accounts of fighting in the trenches. In one letter McIntyre advises his brother not to enlist in the army due to the conditions of war. Also includes details of a furlough in England and France and meetings with women. The final letter to his mother was written shortly before his death. Title supplied by Library. Walter McIntyre died in the Battle of Le Quesnoy, seven days before the end of the war. Simcox, Francis Selwyn, 1880-1967 : Elizabeth Colenso, a biography, and other accounts

Description: The volume comprises Elizabeth Colenso (née Fairburn), a biography by her eldest granddaughter, Frances Edith Swabey which covers the years 1819-1904 (45 & 49 pages); an Account of a visit by the Turakina to the Crozet Islands, Feb 1907, by F M Simcox (6 pages); an account of the golden wedding of W H & F M Simcox, 1920, from the Otaki Mail, (3 pages); a dedication of the Simcox Memorial Window in All Saints Church, Otaki, 1930, from the Otaki Mail (3 pages); an incident in W M Simcox's life and poem entitled `Kapiti Island' (3 pages) and a reference to Stratford House at Camp Hill, Birmingham, England. There are two indexes, one for pages 1-45, the other for pages 108-122. F S Simcox compiled this volume in stages, beginning in 1955 when his eldest sister, Edith Swabey, asked him to type Elizabeth Colenso's biography; as time passed additional projects presented which now form part of the volume: accounts of a visit to the Crozet Islands by F M Simcox, of the golden wedding of W H and F M Simcox, a dedication of a stained glass window, an incident in W M Simcox's life and information about Stratford House, Birmingham, a history of which had been written by J W Simcox. Description: Handwritten diary kept by New Zealand Army nurse Elise Grey between August 1916 to September 1917. The narrative details Grey traveling from to New Zealand to England via the Panama Canal onboard the ‘Rotorua’ and the activities that occurred en route, sightseeing and shopping in and around London whilst awaiting stationing in France, describing the working conditions at the Military Hospitals and the battlefields of France and then returning back to England. Title supplied by Library. Inscriptions: Verso - centre - Children’s writing added later by Marion and David Grey, Elsie's niece and nephew. Elsie Grey was the great aunt of the donor. Physical Description: Holograph in ink and pencil, in printed volume , 26.2cm x 20cm x 1.5cm Processing information: The diary received conservation treatment to replace the cover and binding, which had deteriorated beyond repair. The spine and other fragments have been stored inside the box.
